Watch the driver still have the 6kHz pain spike. Maybe it's not the HD 850 for a reason.

I guess I can just wait for all the first adopters selling off their HD800 to the used market. Then I'll get one and mod it, and voila.

I'm confident that the new version will be good, but I'd like to see the full Super Friends evaluation and some measurements before dropping any money over my current HD800. I too predict a lot of people will be trying to unload their "Pre-S" 800's, which is good news for anyone looking for a high value proposition purchase. Lightly used 800's can already be easily found in the $1K territory. I think the mods will remain quite relevant as a result.

    Why "S" anyways?

S means Super. Like Corolla S

I heard that the spike is a "little bit" better, a "little bit" smoother.

SBAF has been a bit too dry. This announcement sort of helped bring back that old vibe. The good stuff humor at least.

Must be taking notes from Hifiman's 'fantastic' naming conventions.

S for "Spiky"? "Shtock"? "Same"? "Similar"?

Or since it's connected to the HDVD800, maybe it stands for "Softened".

the modded hd800 is still an hd800 it's not a magic change, it fixes a slightly annoying issue with the headphone.

Personally, I dont mind a unmodded hd800 with as long as you pair it with a nice amp. Some people seem more sentive to the 6khz then others. I rolled unmodded for years and I recently removed the mod and yes there is a difference but it still the same headphone

I'll be waiting for the "acoustical absorber" to become available as a replacement part on Senn's website.

Yeah, the mods aren't a magical change but then you have to ask what they're actually doing that's going to justify that higher price tag. All we really know is that it shares the same enclosure dimensions and form factor. Assuming they've looked into treating that enclosure with the right "absorber" ok...that's something Merv and Bill and Ravi (and myself) have been playing about with a while. I highly doubt the driver is different but it's not outside the realm of possibility. Different silver mesh perhaps? Dust cover? Maybe the new cable isn't silver-plated.......:p

I'd say this was going to be another flop, but there's actually a lot of people who won't mod their headphones or have some sort of moral objection to altering a 4-figure product. A lot of people like things out of the box so I guess there's a market for that

    I remember this.

ZOMG! Can't wait for the all solid black HD650S with Marv's mods *caugh* improved acoustic treatment. Now with these cables included:

    http://www.crutchfield.com/p_143CH6...43225&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=47748503065&awdv=c

    But solid black.

Seems interesting to have this as a companion to the original HD-800 headphones.

I wonder why Senneheiser didn't simply rev up the 800's. Why offer two versions if the 800S sound superior and fix flaws?

Just my thoughts, I also hope they price this appropriately and not astronomically high. It's sad reading how people simply expect to pay $300 just for a cable.
