It will go up in price, but hopefully not so much it kills it. It is challenging to sell add on boards to a market that expects everything to be under $50 or even $20! But, we feel this is a professional level product and given the quality will have the necessary value. My best guess right now is $79 USD.

    Cheers,
    Michael

P.S. You up for testing again? I was assuming my first two groups were a given, both those that got units and those that did not.

    I'd buy one at $79.

I would love to test but I only have a Modi Multibit, which means I couldn't test AES.

I understand and I'm sure every audiophile will likely be willing to spend 30 bucks more for new features. Hope the general market will understand too.

Of course I'm up for testing! In what sense "a given"? You assumed we were going not to test this board or we were surely up to test the board?
I sent my request anyway... I have been waiting this release for so long :)

Good to see you are ready to go again, @Michael Kelly . Looking forward to hearing the board. The world has moved in the time between your initial announcement and now, but am certainly willing to test. Plus I can do AES now, as well. Do you know of a source for gender conversion for the AES out?

Sounds great - if your board can do all it claims - I'd be happy to pay $79

My Yggdrasil and Raspy are dying to try out that AES and coax.
I m still in France though.

    Guys,

There will be six units for beta testing. I have more PCB's, but I won't be able to build those for another 2 weeks. So some of you will be disappointed, sorry. Priority will go to the first set of test dummies who respond, then new guys in order of inquiry. Everyone else I should be able fulfill in that 2-3 weeks, up to a total of 12.

In the mean time I need everyone who is interested to send me your shipping address. Shipping will be USPS. Note that for EU there may be duties and/or taxes. We will declare a value of $10 USD, so it should be minimum.

    Cheers,
    Michael

P.S. I order 10 each of an XLR to XLR gender changer for those who do not have a male to male cable and/or an adapter already. So let me know if you are going to test with the XLR and if you need an adapter.

    Guys and Gals -

Quick update on the 502DAC board:

Good News - Using Volumio 2 configured to use a Hifiberry DAC Pro, we have tested 44.1Khz and 48Khz, 96Khz and 192Khz using Analog out, Opto Toslink and Coax/RCA. XLR is not tested yet as we are waiting on some equipment to test with. 1Khz tone test over analog shows a noise floor of around -110 db along with 2nd and 3rd order harmonics each around -105db. Pretty much what you would expect from a PCM5122. :)

Bad News - I switched to Switchcraft RCA jacks from CUI so I could get gold plating. Unfortunately, but all to predictably, I messed up the pinout. We are now re-working the 6 units to use the non-gold plated CUI connectors. This means shipping is delayed until probably Tuesday. :(

Will post when the units go out. BTW, this likely affects whether or not we build the other 14 PCB's we have. We'll need to see how challenge and reliable the re-work is.

    Cheers,
    Michael

[edit] all testing was done using the Pi supply. I expect noise and distortion to down a bit with an external low noise linear.

Update - Well as these things usually go, changing the Switchcraft out for the CUI and adding the wires proved to be a bit more difficult than expected. And as a twist, the end results are poor. They lack mechanical strength and are likely to be damaged simply using them.

So what we have are 6 boards that have all the digital, but can't be used for analog. Versus the original SPD2 there are still some key benefits. First, the isolated XLR and the isolated BNC with RCA termination. And even though it won't be used for output, the PCM5122 handles the clock switching with the default Hifiberry DAC Pro driver.

The plan now is to offer these 6 as is and not to build the rest. A fix is underway and we will simply go to production with that version. No more alpha/beta units.

So who is still interested, with the ability to test XLR and BNC a big factor?

    Cheers,
    Michael

I can't test XLR, so please drop me from the list in favor of someone who can test both.
