Looking at that picture, I see the FPGA card, but am I wrong that it looks like a bunch of resistor ladders on the main board?

Hmmm Schiit Syn. Well it needs to something that audio people would actually buy but be audio purist offensive in some way. Something that pissed a lot of people off was the MoFi issue with In'Groove and Fremer etc. So I am leaning toward an ADC converter with a USB output and multiple digital inputs as well. This product would match up nicely with their upcoming Urd. Oh and hopefully the power switch is on the back too just for the annoyance factor. (For the record no-pun intended I really don't give an F how MoFi masters or sources their records as long as it sounds good , but shame on them for the shady marketing.)

It really looks like a DAC in the pictures. I think we can see a spdif input and analog outputs to a Freya. The "Syn" would then be a reference to being delta-sigma

Schiit already did an analog-to-digital converter called the Jil. Been discontinued for a while.

IIRC it was shelved indefinitely because they could not get the software optimized enough for a commercial release.

    100% guaranteed it's not MQA.

But it will be some sort of signal fuckery.

I’d love to see a much simpler form of signal manipulation, which is a harmonic distortion generator like Nelson Pass’s H2 but with adjustable distortion profiles. If Syn is supposed to be $400 that’s probably not it.

Another idea that would probably piss off the purists and hasn’t been explored enough is a frequency-dependent phase shifter, sort of a Loki for phase.

On the other hand, maybe it’ll piss off the purists just because it sucks. Introducing the Schiit Syn ground-loop injector, for when you really want to hum along with your music!

Maybe it's megacomboburrito with FPGA upscaler to 768hz and then they dump it into a 16-bit R2R DAC. That would upset purists.

I don’t think purists would be upset by this, unless by purists you mean people who like NOS. This isn’t far off from a wavedream, that’s a 26 or 27 bit ladder.

I would have guessed it was the gadget, but people said it’s something different. And he did mention an in house delta sigma dac multiple times…that’s my guess. Anger purists in that it goes against their whole multi-bit shtick

Seems like there'd be a place in the market for a more affordable up-sampler. I heard the Chord M-Scaler make a positive difference in a demo, but it's like $6000 and weird looking/sized. I guess a lot of folks are doing upsampling through software (HQ Player, etc), but I can't be arsed to figure it out, and my computer/slow Internet connection probably wouldn't like it either.

So, if there was a $1000 version of the M-Scaler out there, I'd be interested. Especially if it stacks with Schiit DACs.

But, then, haven't Mike and Jason said many times, "16 bits is enough"?

    1. well, when 768 is less than the 1536 PCM that HQPlayer can deliver via a modern PC/Mac (upscale) CPU
    or
    2. same CPU HQP upscale to 1bit 12.2878M DSD
    to a 20bit DAC,
that Syn idea would seem not cutting edge but perhaps middle ground?

The non-purist aspect was "cheap" R2R coupled with an FPGA. I thought FPGA usually implied both expensive and Delta Sigma, or FPGA + expensive R2R

But in any case, if it's a 16-bit wavedream at non-wavedream prices that also does some of the tricks only $6-10k systems do...compelling?

My vote is that it’s a fancy power cable or power conditioner. :)

    That’s exactly how I would use a Schiit-scaler: with the Audial S5!
