I've seen a couple impressions on Jodie vs Torpedo III - anyone have any more to add? Particularly with HD650.

Both are great amps with the 650. Just a different flavor of presentation. The Jodie offers a more clear/forward presentation where the TIII is a bit more smooth and organic. Jodie want do you any favors with the hd800 but the TIII will.

With the Jot, did you listen to the 800S as well as the 800? If so, any impressions?

Oh well, I could have guessed that one myself, with that treble spike and all :p

    (Thanks though!)

I'm late to this game since I received the Jotunheim two days ago...however for the sake of brevity....my arsenal of SS amps is complete for now. This handles most HPs I have thrown at it (HD 600, HD 650 modded, Slants, modded LCD 2.2) with nothing less than an immersive music experience - after a while forgot the critical aspect, just enjoyed the damn music. I did notice the steely nature of the treble as mentioned by @Psalmanazar but it really does not bother me that much. Having said that, I will not bring myself to use the (modded) HD800 with this amp. The 800 and the ZDS will be a couple for ever. I did try the HE 6 but meh! I have my power amp for that sucker. All HPs were run balanced. The DAC used was Yggdrasil fed by the Mutec 1.2.

I would like to echo @Koth Ganesh with my experience of just getting Jotunheim a few days ago...

I am listening SE stock HD650s with Moby (USB and Coax) and Mani. I very quickly dispatched with my test tracks and started just listening and enjoying music. This is my first big boy amp and to my ears everything sounds "right". The forwardness in the midrange and treble is welcome since the laid back nature of Vali 2 was previously in the chain. The vocals, drums and cymbals are particularly impressive. The metal sound of cymbals are actually how they sound in real life to me. Although it is best on vinyl.

I am going to take @Marvey advice and declare "game over" and explore this system for a long time and go back to enjoying life. I have balanced cable ordered and plan on eventually trying out the dynamat mods on 650.

As far as vinyl goes, with the Mani I am very impressed. If Marv thought the phono card for Jotunheim was superior, I wouldn't hesitate to order it if I already hadn't invested in a Mani. In my rig with Pro-ject debut carbon (acrylic platter & speedbox) with ortofon blue the Mani combined with Jotunheim is giving me the best analog sound I have experienced.

Hey Coach...I am going to go sit on the bench and just enjoy the game for a long while.

Hah, I'm enjoying the Moby/Jot/stock HD650 combo so much that if I get tempted to try modding, I would probably end up modding a second part, in case of disaster.

Yes, I'd love a very analytical giant soundstage/instrument separation transducer some day, which will probably need a different amp, too (HD800S or Stax, most likely), but I do feel like the Jot/650 combo is a really nice daily driver for the money.

The Joti/HD650 combo should be called: The Joteus

I loved HD650 (full mods) from the Torpedo III. More resolving, more nuance, more finesse. Jotunheim has cleaner lines, crisper transients, and better separation. If you are running balanced, headstage is comparable. Balanced gave me better depth and layering on Jotunheim. If you had the money and/or DIY skills, maxxed out Torpedo III is the way to go.

And I think the T3 @Marvey heard was using stock tubes. T3 transient crispness and separation can be controlled/improved with alternate tubes.

I didn't like the T3 with the crispy tubes.

Ask Adam. He explained it all to me. I flush out of my brain anything and everything about tube rolling these days.

Crispy tubes may have been the stock 12AY7

I have a maxed out T3 which I'm very happy with. Thanks for the extra notes.

Possibly. There was a brittle prickly sound to them. I don't think Adam had all the mods yet, special caps, or burned in the solid state devices all the way yet. Or maybe Adam said these were the tubes that were less so.

I did like Ron's TIII alot. Too many variables in the builds.

Point is there are different ways to arrive at synergistic combos with the HD650 that will highlight different aspects. It doesn't always have to be Jotunheim.

Yeah, hoping it synergizes well with Elear. Hard decisions ahead!

    @Hands and @Marvey

Did you guys try the Jotunheim with the MA900? I'm guessing it would be a good match based on its similar sound signature to the HD6x0, but would definitely like to hear your impressions.
