I could be missing something but:

I'm not so sure about the peaks being the cymbals and snares. Don't get me wrong, I've had a DT990 in the past and I know how its treble is raised and can be problematic with certain recordings, but with regards to recordings and peaks, most of the times I've plotted a spectrum the bass was higher than the mids and treble.

Can you provide a recording, or part of a it with +10dB cymbals or snares over average level?

Uh Led Zeppelin and not the warmed over LPs?

Any older CD of a metal album from 1970 to 1991. The cymbals and snare cut through the guitars in the mix and there will probably be some clipped ones twice as loud as anything else.
