I had tried Rogue Magmu Cronus II fitted with Telefuken 12 Ax7 and Ampex 12 Au7, it sound sweet with good tonality but it clipped occasional at climax of orchestral music.

fitted with Nos RTC 5654 RT tube sound fantastic with HD 800s.

I connect this from headphone output of Dave using 15 ft Grado extension cable.

I had tried the output of the above amp with headphone to RCA adapter to Jot R.

Oh my god, Sr1a sounds much more musical with less aggressive trait but also with slight loss of transparency.

Since I am happy with this result, I had ordered more Nos RCA and Sylvania 5654 tubes for tube rolling about 20 minutes ago.

    Audio depends on personal taste.

I firmly believe that Nos tube amplification in front of Jot R will help to make Sr1a more musical.

I am getting opinion from several people, MJ2 may not be a good choice as pre amp.

Thus I may consider Freya or Rogue Rh5.

I can try digital eq with Lyngdorf 2170.

But I still believe that I need tube in the chain to make Jot R more musical.

I like Jot R pretty much but sometimes it get aggressive.

I feel like you're better off getting some vintage power amp like a Tandberg 3006a and using the interface box rather than trying to color the sound to your taste. As you may have noticed, trying to color the sound involves losing too much in the process whereas a different voiced amp will get you what you want while losing less in the process.

Shiit support said the mj2 isn't the best choice for a pre.
    I picked up a Freya+ for that.

Also, on the tube rolling front in the mj2, i think i finally found what really worked for me.

    Siemens E88C 6922 A-Frame from 1974 (gold pin)

good stuff. I don't have a huge stock of tubes (about 10 pairs) but this one is what i'm going to stick with.
upscaleaudio and tubemonger sell the tubes
Also, If you just need a good new one and don't want to play the rolling game$, i'd suggest the Golden Lion. That said, just because it is new doesn't mean get it any place. These are Russian tubes and Russians aren't throwing away anything that works even if it sounds bad. I'd suggest getting it from a vendor you trust and have it testing/patched etc...

The tubes i hated the most are the Telsa tubes for the early 70s. Both military and normal ones. ugh. so bright.. very fatiguing.

These are my top 5 (.. but from a very limited sample pool):
    1. Siemens E88CC / 6922 A-Frame Gold Pin (1974)
    2. BEL E88CC / 6922 Philips SQ Design (1960s)
    3. Matsushita / National PCC88/7DJ8
    4. Tungsram PCC88/7DJ8 (1971)
    5. Golden Lion 6922 (new)

what headphones did it test with them (which clearly plays a big part)
Mainly the Focal Utopia and the Meze Empyreans .. which.. did get much better when i changed the cable and with the siemens tubes... but.. they are fine and "fun" (key word for there isn't any magic here.. but enjoyable enough.)
(and yes, odd that two very different headsets work well with the same tube. :) )

side note, my fav tubes for the Ferya+ is the CBS 5962.
