I had tried Rogue Magmu Cronus II fitted with Telefuken 12 Ax7 and Ampex 12 Au7, it sound sweet with good tonality but it clipped occasional at climax of orchestral music.

    https://www.soundandvision.com/content/tube-amps-pocket-change-nobsound-ns-08e
fitted with Nos RTC 5654 RT tube sound fantastic with HD 800s.

I connect this from headphone output of Dave using 15 ft Grado extension cable.

I had tried the output of the above amp with headphone to RCA adapter to Jot R.

Oh my god, Sr1a sounds much more musical with less aggressive trait but also with slight loss of transparency.

Since I am happy with this result, I had ordered more Nos RCA and Sylvania 5654 tubes for tube rolling about 20 minutes ago.

    Audio depends on personal taste.

I firmly believe that Nos tube amplification in front of Jot R will help to make Sr1a more musical.

I am getting opinion from several people, MJ2 may not be a good choice as pre amp.

Thus I may consider Freya or Rogue Rh5.

I can try digital eq with Lyngdorf 2170.

But I still believe that I need tube in the chain to make Jot R more musical.

I like Jot R pretty much but sometimes it get aggressive.

I feel like you're better off getting some vintage power amp like a Tandberg 3006a and using the interface box rather than trying to color the sound to your taste. As you may have noticed, trying to color the sound involves losing too much in the process whereas a different voiced amp will get you what you want while losing less in the process.

Shiit support said the mj2 isn't the best choice for a pre.
    I picked up a Freya+ for that.

Also, on the tube rolling front in the mj2, i think i finally found what really worked for me.

    Siemens E88C 6922 A-Frame from 1974 (gold pin)

good stuff. I don't have a huge stock of tubes (about 10 pairs) but this one is what i'm going to stick with.
upscaleaudio and tubemonger sell the tubes
Also, If you just need a good new one and don't want to play the rolling game$, i'd suggest the Golden Lion. That said, just because it is new doesn't mean get it any place. These are Russian tubes and Russians aren't throwing away anything that works even if it sounds bad. I'd suggest getting it from a vendor you trust and have it testing/patched etc...

The tubes i hated the most are the Telsa tubes for the early 70s. Both military and normal ones. ugh. so bright.. very fatiguing.

These are my top 5 (.. but from a very limited sample pool):
    1. Siemens E88CC / 6922 A-Frame Gold Pin (1974)
    2. BEL E88CC / 6922 Philips SQ Design (1960s)
    3. Matsushita / National PCC88/7DJ8
    4. Tungsram PCC88/7DJ8 (1971)
    5. Golden Lion 6922 (new)

what headphones did it test with them (which clearly plays a big part)
Mainly the Focal Utopia and the Meze Empyreans .. which.. did get much better when i changed the cable and with the siemens tubes... but.. they are fine and "fun" (key word for there isn't any magic here.. but enjoyable enough.)
(and yes, odd that two very different headsets work well with the same tube. :) )

side note, my fav tubes for the Ferya+ is the CBS 5962.

Hey Y’all I’m hoping someone smarter than me can help me with an issue I am having with an MJ2 I got delivered today. I purchased it used.

The amp came with the LSST and stock tubes.

When I have the stock tubes in the second relay only executes when the unit is on high gain. Moreover, the sound I do get out of the unit is EXTREMELY low when on high gain and turned all the way up. On the Jot I have it would be like low gain and barely turned to the right. Also if I flip the gain switch to low it completely cuts out sound. I’m driving HD800s so these should be much easier to drive. When I plug my Jotunheim into the BF2 as the source I experience no such issues. I think that this may be a warranty/repair issue? I also tried the LSST and they sound very distorted too and I can turn it all the way max volume and still hear the music but the volume is like 20x louder. My thought is that the MJ shouldn’t even need to be turned up this much and that if something wasn’t wrong it would probably destroy my headphones at that high of a volume.

I also tried both balanced in and the SE. the SE Input sounds ... well like 100% hot garbage. I think the unit may have gotten damaged in shipping.

Has anyone else had something like this happen?

    Any help is appreciated.

    TIA

Just a guess. Sometimes the volume knob wiggles loose during shipping. This may have in an inadvertent way, given you "low volume." Take the knob off with an allen wrench and reset the knob to check.

It's broken. Mjolnir 2 should be blowing out your headphones with volume on max at high gain.

ADD: Make sure you have inputs selected correctly.
It seems you already tried, but check again. Otherwise you may be hearing crosstalk from the inputs.

I have the XLR in selected. Such a weird issue. The volume knob seems aligned correctly. It hard stops when I turn in all the way to the right. The seller said he would cover the repair costs. I don't think Shiit allows for warranty transfer when you purchase used.

When I flip the gain switch with tubes in does the relay delay again? I think it reengages low gain but the volume is so low that I cannot hear anything.

I wonder why the sound would be output but it be so faint. Any idea what part may cause that? Also, interesting that the LSST is also outputting sound at a relatively much higher volume.

Hi, I am new to SBAF..
I had my Schiit Mjolnir2 for nearly 2 years already.
Recently I acquired a RME ADI-PRO fs. It can be used to measure frequency response, etc..

So I hooked up my RME -> Schiit Mjolnir2 -> RME.
Schiit Mjolnir2 is on high gain, RME is outputing 96k24 pcm 1khz tone.
Here is 1khz THD graph.[IMG] (sorry still trying to upload a pic here)
    URL link here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Bid6itwjGdeXWXuq5

I found out the right channel has more noises than the left channel.
I have try swapping the cable L/R to and from RME and Schiit Mjolnir2.
And the noise will go to the left channel.
I also swapped the tube, (swapping the tube does not make a difference)

So I suspect my unit's right channel has more noises.
Also my right channel is around 0.4 db louder than the left channel.

If you swapped L and R cables from the RME and the higher noise channel moves from R to L, then it would appear that the issue lies with the RME.

Do a loopback measurement with the RME as a sanity check. The cables can be faulty as well, a DMM check wouldn't hurt.

My understanding - he switched both - input and output.

    Thanks for the info.

Actually I have already done a loop back check on RME..
I think the noise are not audible, it just the audible level difference that bugged me.
I may do more test when I have time.. probably swap some tubes to test.

Anyone have any initial impressions or expectations of the differences between the Jot 2 and MJ2? I currently have the MJ2 but am missing my desk space from the Jot 1. MJ2 is a great amp but wondering what kind of drawbacks or differences I could expect. I know the Jot 2 just launched but am curious of the communities initial thoughts and expectations.

Jot 2 incoming. Don't know when. FedEx will be slow for obvious reasons.

Looks like Jason talked about having several things in the pipeline for 2021. I think he mentioned he didn't want to do a Mjolnir 3 but seeing as the rest of the lineup has been refreshed it makes you wonder. The slam of that amp was ridiculous.

Yea, he keeps alluding to his massive tube amp prototype. I am guessing whatever comes out of that will be its replacement... or not. Who knows that they got cooking over there. That said, I love my MJ2 and how it pairs with my 800s' but its pretty big and with working at home I need the desk-space back. I may move the MJ2 to my dedicated listening space in the living room and get the Jot 2 for the desk depending on how the feedback is.

If Schiit made an SET that had good HD800 synergy and was cheaper than the high-end stuff that would be an interesting proposition.

I honestly don't think a corporate giant like Sennheiser would make such a niche product (SET amp) and market it for the masses at a cheaper price than what small businesses like DNA or EC offers.

I think what you read is different than what I wrote. I said Schiit, not Sennheiser. I agree, Senn would probably not make a SET.
