RE20 is useful when you have many voices with which to work. SM7 is a bit more finicky and a little more challenging to avoid hum. But if 421 works well with your voice, then that's your mic. One voice talent that came through my studio was best served by an AT4033, even though we tried Elux 251, U195, U95S, etc. high end mics.
Yeah, I've been looking at mics recently but more for singing than for voice work, but have read up on the mics mentioned. I finally picked up a mic, but haven't had my voice in shape to do anything with it yet. Hope the 421 works well enough.
@atomicbob The AT4033 is my favorite large diaphragm condenser. So clean. I'd almost rather have one of those than a TLM103. My voice can be dry and the SM7 is okay...just want more lush smoothness I guess. And to cut out background noise.
I picked up a cheaper not well known mic out of China, but somehow championed by a few Gearslutz people. From what I can tell it's really quiet on self noise with gain. Also doesn't sound too bad with my voice so far. Need more time to see if it was worth it though.
Having both the TLM103 and AT4033 I can say each has its pros and cons. But the match between voice and microphone is important to gain best overall sound. That is why my studio had so many microphones in the locker. RE20 is always a safe bet, but may not provide spectacular match as other possibilities.
