It's what I refer to as "second wave innovation" — when a company sees declining growth in the customer base, so they try to figure out ways to derive more revenue from existing customers.
It's not really innovation, and customers generally (rightly) hate it.
I'd be on board with remasters that were truly better than the originals. Like Vapor Trails Remixed which (mostly) fixed the horrid mastering of the original, or some of the Steven Wilson remixes of Yes or Jethro Tull. But that's not what we usually get.
At this point even the remastering gimmick has mostly been replaced by expansive deluxe sets that try to sell higher priced, higher margin items to a smaller loyal fan base.
