The Fender Squire stuff has improved a lot over the last five years or so. Or just check Craigslist or local Facebook groups for a used Fender Jazz (nice slender neck compared to the chunkier p-bass neck).

Fretless can be cool, especially for a cello player, but that's a bullshit implementation of it. You want a neck that never had frets.
Anyhow, the Fender you found looks solid. That P/J (P for Precision, J for Jazz) pickup configuration is popular and versatile. I'd go for it. Good reviews on Sweetwater (better than Amazon or whatever). http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JagBsVM3TS/reviews

I don't trust cheap Ibanez (under $500) or really any Epiphone. I wouldn't do it.

Ok. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but I guess it's worth it. Now, amplifier, I was planning on using a Yamaha pa amp with a Yamaha pa speaker with 15" jbl 2226h I had on hand. Would that work? Seems like it should, amp has instrument level inputs and controls and such
