Just what the world needs more of: to be sold to incessantly. This is our dystopia.

You can shut it off by going to Settings > Personalization > Start. Turn off the toggle for "Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more." Or do like I do and use Stardock's Start 11 that allows you to fully customize the Start Menu and you don't have to worry about what moronic shit MS does with their Start Menu, lol.

The Arch and Mint Linux start to become more appealing by the day.

On a freak gaming laptop running last year's totl shit W11 starts up 5+ minutes, screensaver goes on fans start blasting at full revs. IDK what the hell is it doing in the background - mining some coin for Bill Gates?.

STOP tolerating Windows. Their user interface paradigm peaked in 1995. I enjoy Linux Mint MATE with a simple "stat menu" and additional side panels which have all my regular needs. Fancier windowing decor courtesy of Compiz (included) and Emerald (which I think I had to compile).

I have not missed MS for a moment in about 15 years. Except now, I confess, since photography became a bit serious, I want to try some of this super de-noising software. So I might set up another small, cheap box. One day... I'm not in a hurry.

Eh the main reason I'm still on Windows is games and foobar2000 (I'm a creature of habit, don't wish to have to migrate to another player even though ALSA and Pipewire seem like they'd be good for audio)

Foobar was lovely. I used to use it at it's most simple and wanted no more from an audio player. Nearest Linux equivalent is Deadbeef

Deadbeef is what a friend who mainly uses Arch recommended as well, seems fine yeah

I have not yet looked at Pipewire. I use JACK. Actually I am having some problems just now --- but I don't feel like having a huge Linux audio rejig!

Yeah, that's one of the main deterrents to moving to Linux: actually having to use your brain for a change, which many computer users nowadays seem disinclined to do (hello, haha).

Pipewire seems to be the best all-rounder with ALSA being the best "audiophile" thing for bit-perfect, IIRC. Similar to exclusive mode? Tempting.

Just use as it comes: everything will *probably* just work, just fine.

I wanted more, I wanted Firewire, I wanted to mess around. These days, I lack the techie enthusiasm. But you never know. One day...

Linux without any bitperfect is better sounding than W machine with fancy player IDK why.

It *might* be. Back in the day, I was coming from a Windows setup which had developed huge latency troubles. I mean the real, unlistenable kind, where the machine stops to do something else.

I still had to work hard to get it working well, especially with JACK/Firewire. I settled on a studio distro with realtime kernel.

Realtime kernels don't seem to be necessary any longer. I still use JACK and the KXStudio apps.

And I still need to reboot before playing music, sometimes.

All of that is better than everyday Windows. I'm just too old for that stuff!
