Generally if you are happy with your DAC, then don't bother changing it. Synergy is important and best not to screw with it if you've already got it.

Why would I like "FAKE" treble? or for that matter unnatural music...not real or lifelike.
In my opinion the GRACE DESIGN monitoring system that is used in recording studios does a superb job and there is nothing fake in its performance but as mentioned it is in the recordin...nothing can change a bad recording.
Looking at Schiit I wanted to be able to compare the Grace and a dac from SCHIIT's and I am strongly considering the Yggdrasil.
Now to my liking I stream a lot of music from TIDAL using APPLE TV. According to SCHIIT's the APPLE TV & the APPLE AIRPORT EXPRESS will trigger the lower spec clock b/c it is locked to 48kHz and has re sampling.
So the question has change from what dac to what is a good streamer to avoid triggering the lower spec clock without breaking the bank.

    Thanks,
    blue

There are a lot BS terms in audio but so far synergy isn't one of them, if a review talks about system synergy I'm taking notes. High-end systems are all about synergy; with bad synergy you can make a $100k system sound like shit, and with good synergy you can make a $10k system be about as good as it gets.

I never had any trouble even with super cheap streamers into Yggdrasil TOSLINK. Buy the DAC first and try with the gear you have to see if the light comes on (Gungnir Multibit also has it).

If you buy either of these two new, then you are also getting Gen5 USB, which should sound equally good as any other input, so that's another option.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that feeding the Yggdrasil a 48khz sampling rate would trigger some kind of internal lower spec clock. From what I know, there isn't another set of clocks in the Yggdrasil for "loser" mode.

He is getting that from the Yggdrasil manual:

    5 VCO/VCXO Indicator.

Also known as the “buy better gear” light. If this is illuminated, the Yggdrasil’s input clock regeneration (Adapticlock) is in VCO mode, or lower-quality mode. This means your source does not provide a good center frequency, or jitter is too high for the better VCXO mode
    to operate.

He shouldn't really worry as almost nothing triggers this light, it's like a couple satellite receivers and then apple airport express.

So Yggdrasil bufferring the data and regerating the clock when the source clock and data is too jittery is somehow a fault of the Yggdrasil?

Would not this be a feature / improvement to shitty sources?

I was making no judgements as to the validity of his statements. I just pointed out where he got the idea. Having said that, I do agree with your points and what dmckean44 said above.

Your cheapest option is the raspberry Pi3 with the Hifiberry Digi Pro add on, however it's not a direct plug n' play type of device. @Kattefjaes has a great guide here and without it I'd have been dead in the water.

Next, I would recommend the Auralic Aries Mini. It's a quality unit and incredibly user friendly.

Above this, you have your UltraRendu, upper Aries models (full Femto I owned and enjoyed a lot), sMS-200ultra and I'm sure something I'm forgetting.

PS Audio builds their DirectStream dacs with built in Ethernet inputs for streaming which I quite enjoy and currently use.
