Hey there- Yep, that's me! And yeah, the volume output thing is something I consider a necessity with the recent sony ZX players.

I just tried re-enabling the sound adjustments just a bit ago, rebooting, and giving it a listen... and everything is so much more murky and blunted. I think if it had so only sound that way, I would not have kept this DAP. Sound adjustments disabled again right away!

You are probably not increasing power, but removing any digital sound processing or "enhancement", thus increasing gain (or more precisely avoiding digital attenuation).

I Agree, once I disabled all that crap I couldn't go back to the original settings.

There will be a tour for the Cayin I5 dap. Looks promising. Android based, can't wait to hear it.

It seems like I'm caring less and less these days about DAPs and audio in general. I'm actually using... .... ... a Nokia Lumia 635 with Win10 installed.
    Yeah, seriously...
In fact, I'm selling my FiiO X5 II since I use the Lumia so much. I actually only used it via blu on my car but started taking it to work as well and haven't really used my FiiO any more. Thing is, I don't even miss it.

Not sure why the "Regression", maybe I just don't have enough time for being an "audiophile" and I'm just enjoying the music. Don't get me wrong, there IS indeed a huge difference in sound between them, but again, I'm just not missing it.

I think it's actually better not being too picky cause I pretty much know that I would have kept spending money looking for my unicorn.
The only other player that I would probably try is the Cowon Plenue D, and just because like with the phone, I wouldn't be charging it every day!

    Just saying... ;)

As long as you are enjoying the music, that's all that matters. I'm sure a number of us are jealous. I'm very happy where I'm at as well, but I'm still searching for more. I'm fairly set with IEMS, but I still love trying new ones.

No. It depends on your requirements and how much money you have for dollar-cost average investing to zero.

That makes sense... and it makes one wonder how much Sony screws up a good sound with all the enhancements. It's like cutting all the cords and setting the ZX2 free as it was meant to be heard, and capable of sounding.

I actually like their enhancements sometimes. Just wish it had more power. I tried rooting it but failed. If I could root, I'd have one right now. Maybe the zx3...

I love the Sony players (UI and "DAC" quality), but as you guys have noted, they lack power, and my UERMs really seemed to need the power. The Andromeda IEM on the other hand do fine, but there is a little bit of hiss with the X. I am looking forward to checking out the ZX2 or ZX100 as they have lower output Z than the X. I can live with the hiss because many of my recordings have more inherent noise. I am one of those weirdos who loves noise in recordings because I know they haven't been processed to shit. You know, it's sort of like if you prefer your porn with softening filters and a lot of retouching, or if you just like it minimally processed.

Onkyo continues to tempt me, although I still think the value proposition is borderline. Dual slots are a compelling feature for me. Have to see whether it has enough huevos to drive the SINE.

I'm back on the fence, thinking about ordering it myself. Really curious if I'll hear any difference between that and my X7. Probably not, just another costly audio education.

My infatuation with the Onkyo is over. I got to play with one for an extended period at T.H.E. Show, and discovered that the interface has some quirks that I find annoying enough to be deal-breakers. Which is true of every DAP i've tried in the last 18 months, including two that I bought and subsequently sole (Pono and AK Jr.).

Might as well admit it: until there's an iOS device with native hi-res and >256 gigs of storage, or something with an interface that beats iOS 9, I'm out of the market.

Any thoughts on what current smartphones double as a great DAP? I'm going to be breaking my current contract to go with T-Mobile soon and would prefer to get something ideal. Currently using an iPhone 6plus and I'm fine with it paired to my IEMs, just wondering if there's a better/more versatile experience out there.

I tend to consume all my music-on-the-go streaming from my Subsonic server at home, full control over transcoding on the fly so my software/media interface is not a concern (cross platform apps). I'm more interested in everyones' thoughts on the hardware aspect of this... Thanks in advance :)

Lg v10 is a great dap. It compares to some midfi daps, at the least. Has modest power and sounds really nice. Best sounding phone I've owned. Lg G5 is supposed to sound really good as well, along with some of the newer Sammies. I've read the HTC 10 (the new one, I believe it's called the) is quite good. I've only heard the LG V10, which I own.

HTC are known for one of smartphone manufacturer that doesn't brag about what DAC chip they use or what schematic they use...but they are really good sounding smartphone..

HTC M8 is one of my favourite (SQ wise) and still using it till now..

A couple of trusted ears on head-fi really like it. I want to hear it myself, but 2 people who's ears I trust say it is great.

Do you have a link to their impressions by any chance? I'm looking for something affordable super portable, quiet and not necessarily high powered to pair with my incoming Andromedas. On paper the Plenue D fits the bill.
