Do you consider GUTB's headphone system to be hi-fi or mid-fi? (Post #185)

Why are the Koss' not balanced? The balanced output of the Rag is nerfed. The Koss' need to be rewired with expensive balanced cables.

    From the Jotunheim thread:

The Jotunheim doesn't sum the channels, it's using an entirely different topology than other balanced systems. For someone who likes to school us on what is and isn't true hi-fi, he sure doesn't seem to actually know all that much.

And for that matter, why wouldn't you trust the summing on the amp? Because it cost less than the Gustard?

$12 million, your honor! $12 million! I need $12 million for my sprained eyes!

One would think, or at least hope, the someone that had sufficient technical wherewithal to make meaningful* mods to something like Yggdrasil would be capable of expressing themselves coherently and was capable of putting together a web-site with some commonality, in, oh, maybe at least the fonts, from one page to another.

    Nope!

Instead you get someone cutting up expensive pieces of printed silver foil and sticking them, willy nilly, all over the tops of the electrolytics. And do you know what sticking bits of WA Quantum stickers all over your caps actually does?

Well, in simple terms, it makes your capacitors look shitty.

(*"Meaningful" as opposed to the kind of inane nonsense that the truly untalented manage to foist upon themselves - so, basically, we wouldn't expect that from whatever clown came up with that tripe).

    --

In other words, I also hope that site is a put-on. Sadly, I expect I'd be disappointed.

    --

Finally, why is that absolutely every time I read ANYTHING about any Gustard product, the discussion immediately goes to how it was modded. I can only conclude that they're unlistenable without mods. The X20U that crossed my path a while ago did nothing to dissuade me from that perception.

Amateur! You're supposed to ditch the fuse altogether and use a solid cast copper rod that's at least .99999999999999 pure.

The X20 was a very large upgrade over my last DAC, which was a Chinese DIY job from eBay (Sabre, 2 power supplies, high end opamps). The DIY unit was a significant upgrade over the Modi 2. The X20 is a fully balanced designed that featured very high degree of clarity and black backgrounds right out of the box. Since some basic mods were universally reported to improve it further I went ahead with them -- and the improvement was noticeable. It is widely reported to equal or beat the Yggdrasil.

    Wow.

    Abyss >> Any dynamic.
X20 tweakaudio doggedly modded >> Yggdrasil (maybe even everything)

I mean, dude, it's not like folks here haven't heard some of the gear you are talking about.

I guess you like what you like. BTW, congratulations on reaching summit-fi on pocket change.

    Bullshit.
    1. It's $799. Not expensive enough. Looks like cheap plastic toy. Doesn't weigh enough.
    2. Sabre: mid-fi and unnatural sounding, unless massaged by Larry Ho.
    3. Doesn't have a big choke in the power supply (you can always tell how good a piece of gear is based on its power supply - this is what you said no?).
    4. Doesn't use wasteful shunt regulation
    5. All Gustard gear in the past has been proclaimed by noobs to be better than known references. This has never turned out to be true.
    6. Yggdrasil is not the end-all-be-all of sources. Yggdrasil is still ultimately a value proposition, albeit one that just does make hi-end status. You need to move up higher to totalDAC d1-twelve or Metrum Pavane. True high-end source means high-end turntable, high-end cart, high-end phonostage, and high-end phono cables. No source below $5000 retail can be considered true high-end.
Face it, all your upstream gear is too shitty and not expensive enough to take advantage of any of your TOTL headphones. Widely reported doesn't cut it, especially at $799 and designed-in and made-in China.

Have you actually tried a Gungnir Multibit or Yggdrasil? How would you know how the Gustard compares if you have no point of comparison?

At the same time, you should read more about the products you're buying, so you actually know what they can and can't do (like the Jotunheim not summing the balanced signal).

Also, you really need to understand the people who participate on this forum. You clearly are not any kind of authority on most equipment because you haven't heard most of it! Stop coming off as a know it all. If you acknowledge that you actually know very little, there's a lot to learn here.

There are people here using systems that outclass yours by several thousands of dollars and in total sound quality. That doesn't mean every word they say is gold, but at least they've actually heard a proper hi-fi system while you're still dicking around with wrapping tape around fuses.

I don't know why so many people pontificate on things they know nothing about. If someone asks a question about an Eddie Current amp, I don't jump in and say "well I read that blah blah blah", because I don't own an EC amp, and have only heard them in passing at meets. I'm not foolish enough to think that makes me an expert. There's far more out there that I haven't heard than what I have. There are people here who have and have heard gear that I can only dream of. If I'm too busy flapping my gums to hear what they have to say, I'll miss out on all the knowledge they can impart.

If you really want to be a positive participant here, shut your mouth and open your ears. You don't have to agree with every assessment of every headphone, amp, or DAC, but the sooner you realize how little you actually know, the sooner you'll be able to open your mind to gear you might never have known about. And even if you end up learning nothing, at least you'll have a better time here, since you seem determined to stay.

What a strange thread. GUTB, you are getting tortured Stations of the Cross style. What are you getting out of this?

BTW some initial notes on Jotunheim:

    1. I switched over to using the balanced inputs; if the Jotunheim's input channel is balanced than it makes sense to feed it a balanced input from a balanced source.
    2. Impressive performance with the TH900...seems much improved compared to Ragnarok. Need to do a direct comparison.
    3. In spite of marketing claim to the contrary, this amp just barely handles the HE-6 at a listening volume with pot turned all the way up and set to high gain. Will be insufficient for some of my quieter tracks.

Of course the unit hasn't broken it yet so we'll see in the comming days / weeks. Right now it seems to lack of muscle the HE-6 requires. BUT, it's the first time I felt the TH900 could compete in a major way with the HE-6+Ragnarok combo.

You didn't do anything stupid to your Gustard DAC, like implement mods to kill the output voltage levels did you?
