I was going to suggest hiding the DAC (and DDC) under the bed.
It also avoids the temptation to switch it off :D

So, would Jot still be a better choice for PMx2 (or PM-1/PM-2) than Lyr 3 if one was not inclined to just get the Rag (which by all accounts would be the best pairing).

Save your money and go for the mutibit?

If you're going to spend the cash and ship it around, why go halfway?
It's one of those beds that have storage underneath the mattress, so not really possible, it goes down to the floor :p

Yeah, that's good thinking normally. But I already own a Gen 5 Bifrost Multibit, so I actually _want_ a D/S DAC for the purpose of having something different. So from that standpoint, if there is a substantial difference between the G1 and G2 boards, I could be interested.

I don't think anyone has heard it. Jason said he thought it sounds much better than G1.

I wonder... if you purchased the cards separately (as a self installed board) do you still get the 15 day trial / return period? Perhaps buy the Lyr 3 without a card in it, add the 4490 G2 and MB cards to it and demo each - see which one you like more, and then return the other?

I would be sending an email to Schiit before I did that to get confirmation the cards could be returned, were I the person who did that.

All my Schiit gear is in silver, but I might well order black if I had the option. (I assume the option is limited to vendor error to keep prices down.) But all the pictures I've seen of black Jotunheims have a huge silver volume knob which, at least in pictures, looks just horrible (subjective, of course). Does it look any better in person? If not, I'd just as soon stay with silver.

If people need black so badly, why don’t you just paint it? A can of spray paint costs like $3. Personally, I think the black case with the silver knob is ugly AF.

Curious how it compares to the BW2 for dynamic headphones.

Even better use plasti-dip as I have in the past and if you don’t like it or deceide to go back to silver it peels off like it was never there.

Here are some initial impressions based on listening yesterday with a few different tubes. I'll start with general impressions based on the base, non-TS Russian tube and sprinkle in some tube rolling notes.

    - Immediately apparent the upper midrange and treble is not overly sharp, steely, and (arguably) bright as the Jot, nor quite as smooth or muted as can be heard on the Magni 3 or Vali 2 (which are still much closer to normal/neutral to my ears that Jot). It's also not dry and crunchy sounding like the Mjolnir 2 can be. If anything, take the Magni 3's upper-mids and treble, and make them a bit sharper, faster, and tangible without necessarily making it brighter or more fatiguing. There are times a hint of sibilance or fuzz may come through, but I've found specific tubes can negate this (thus it might not be inherent to the amp).

    - Bass is rather balanced with a slight accentuation and slight bit of warmth, not unlike the Magni 3. Good extension and sense of power. Fairly good texture and pitch, i.e. overall quality, but still not quite TOTL. It's better than, say, the ZDT Jr, but can still be a bit murky at times relative to the cleanest sounding and most slamming amps. Rolling tubes can get you a more neutral, leaner sound, or make the bass too bloated and warm. So you can tweak this area as well with very positive gains.

    - Overall tone and timbre, coupled with speed, clarity, and resolution, all strike a great balance. Definitely more lively than the Magni 3 or Vali 2 without adding painful qualities of almost any kind. While the Lyr 3 does kind of have the same house sound as those two amps, it's more engaging and energetic. Some laid-back traits, but not what I'd call a laid-back amp.

    - Staging is still a weakness. Like the Magni 3 or Jot, the stage lacks in depth and layering. It is more forward sounding than not. I'd also say the amp lacks some of that additional air, nuances, and plankton you get from the best amps. While the ZDT Jr. also suffers with large, layered staging, I do find it do have more nuances, air, and a sense of atmosphere than the Lyr 3. Again, the ZDT Jr. has a lot of those "spooky" tube + OPT couple amp traits, whereas the Lyr 3 definitely has more of a hybrid tube + SS sound in a sense. Trade offs both ways.

Small nitpicks aside, so far it sounds like a well-rounded, very nice sounding amp. It's like if the Magni 3 and Vali 2 had a baby and gave it steroids, despite ethical concerns. Kind of a next-tier hybrid of those two amps in a way.

Easier to recommend than the ZDT Jr, for example, because it will probably pair well with about any headphone, but also more likely to be good at a lot of things rather than excellent at some but with more trade offs like the ZDT Jr. In other words, more likely to cater to broad tastes, but less likely to cater to those with really specific tastes in the sub-$1K area.

Anyway, enough rambling for now. Unfortunately, it might be a while before I have time to really dig into the Lyr 3 at length. But I wanted to listen while I had the chance and report my initial findings!

Not to be a poison pill, but based on early impressions it seems that the lyr 3 is a good amp. Good at most things but possibly not great at any.

I think that I'm finding it easier to be enamored with amps like CTH and Vali 2 because they represent such tremendous value propositions in a hobby that is typically embarrassingly expensive. So it's easy for me to find these amps refreshingly affordable and enjoyable. They are arguably worth 2x the sticker price based on the current market and exhibited performance.

But then, the lyr 3 seems like it might be a good amp but not punching way above it's price point...? I guess that I need to formulate my own opinion based on real world testing which probably won't be until May at the Atlanta headphone meet where Schiit will be exhibiting.

Anyway, thanks @Hands for sharing your thoughts.

I just dropped into the Schiitr to check out the Lyr 3, and I think it's more than merely good. It sounds very refined, controlled and powerful. It will probably have more power available with a line level signal coming in from an outboard dac, rather than a USB powered one as it is in the store. I tried it with the Ether Flow closed, and T1s and HE 400i. To me, it sounds like there is more micro detail in the mids as opposed to the Jot. Bass control is similar : very tight and well-controlled. I liked it enough that if they had stock in the store I would have bought one on the spot to try out with my LCD 4 and Clears. I think I'll be picking one up in the next month

I think you're way off. Mine doesn't arrive until tomorrow and it will be Sunday before I can put it though the paces, but it's anything at like the prototype brought to the meet last July, it's excellent.

Schiit is a small company who might really wish to cater to everyone, but imagine the cost of stocking both silver and black as an option for every product they sell. Their accountant would have a fit; not going to happen.

I believe black can be used to cover slight defects in manufacturing (correct me if I am wrong) but that seems the best use case and keeps black exclusive. I imagine they are working on tight margins and every option offered decreases profitability. I bet some of the staff meetings get interesting:)
