I never meant my post to be broken-off another discussion and serve as an opening to an alternate thread. You want to delete it, fine, but don't make me the OP without consent. It's just basic human decency. High school has been over for a while and I have no interest in participating. Frankly, this act is somewhat offensive.

Shaffer, not everyone here hates the 105. I have both the 105 and the Yggdrasil in my system and have spent a lot of time A/B'ing the two. On my system and with my ears the differences between the much beloved Yggdrasil and the reviled 105 are not large.

I strongly suspect some here are so pre-biased against the 105 that they wouldn't give it a fair shake even if presented an opportunity. When you are primed to like or hate something you are going to hear your expectations. I would love to bring my 105 to a meet and keep it under a shroud to try and get unbiased opinions.

Without far more stringent testing I'm not sure we will get any kind of objective answer on whether the 105 is a good piece of kit or not. I respect Ravi's opinion, even if I disagree with it and with how forcefully he is putting it out there.

It's totally normal for threads to branch off like this. That's just how we like to organize our forum. If an interesting (but off-topic) discussion arrives, we make a new thread rather than nuke it like Head-Fi.

Don't take the thread branching as any sort of moderator discouragement. A branching thread is not something that invalidates your argument (unless you let it be). If you don't wish to participate in this thread, then that's your choice. But keep in mind the so-called "Oppo haters" will go unchallenged. This thread otherwise serves as useful reference for any folks considering the device for themselves and want to hear arguments for and against.

 

I have an Oppo BDP-103. I like it because it is a really good digital media player. The video processing is exceptional with DVD rips (upscaling in particular), Blu-ray and everything in between. It also has worked well as a digital transport. I use its analog outs because my living room setup is already incredibly compromised by the limitations of room dimensions, arrangement and aesthetics. I realize most of the basic functions can be provided by a $100 player but the two HDMI outs (and two in), ARC, USB slots, Netflix have let me forgo having a receiver at all (stuck with two channel as it's all I can do in my room). I also have SACDs and it can output straight DSD to my Pulse Xfi. So for me, it was a worthwhile value proposition.
The 105 seems like a bridge too far - I like the 103 a lot as an audio and video transport, so why pay for upgraded DACs and outs that you'd be better off skipping? You could put that money into a better DAC, receiver or prepare.

 

I don't see what's wrong with becoming the OP for this thread, seeing as how you're strongly advocating the 105's merits. The more gear discussed, the better.

Is the DAC implementation in the BDP-105 similar to that used in the Oppo HA-1? I was strongly considering the HA-1 but backed off after getting the impression (on HF) that the DAC was a weak spot. That's not to say this translates to how the 105 performs in an appropriately tuned speaker-oriented system.

To clarify: why pay for an upgraded internal DAC that still isn't good, when you could instead either buy a receiver/prepro with a decent DAC or use a standalone DAC, both of which would be significantly better.
I realize it sounds like some weird shell game with money flying everywhere.
