Oh ok...I'd be worried shipping a turntable as well. Don't worry and keep an eye out...

Lol, just the brony community at large. It's not really my flavor, but I'm of the philosophy, "if something makes you happy, run with it." I've never understood the hate.

Good luck Marv! What turntable are you planning on getting? Avenger? SME? TechDAS?

The Avenger probably sounds nice, but it has zero aesthetic appeal to me, and I am not totally convinced of its design. I'm sticking with what I know. Gaurav let me hear all three of his TTs for more than a few hours, and he even played around with tweaks like isolation feet on phono pres (which did make a difference). His VPI TNT HR with the rim drive was definitely no slouch compared to the others. Having also heard Adam's Classic 3, and extrapolating from all of my experiences, I have a pretty good idea where I want to go. I do like the sound of the Classic series with its tightly-coupled, high-mass approach.

The length of the arm doesn't seem to be a big deal, but the VTA adjustment and heavier aluminum/steel/MDF plinth are at the top of my list. I'd also like to run two arms, whether the combination be a reference cart / color cart combination or stereo / mono. So basically one table will meet my requirements: the Classic 4. I don't expect a huge leap in sound quality, but the flexibility (VTA adjust, two arms, etc.) is more what I am after. I had considered upgrading the Classic 1 and maybe getting another table, but the 4 already comes with the upgrades on the motor, VTA, periphery ring, etc. The rosewood is an aesthetic plus. That was kind of got me thinking after I saw some good photos of it. The VPI website and information materials do a bad job showing how beautiful these rosewood tables look.

I haven't totally decided yet. Checking how much I get from selling stuff I don't use much anymore.

For obvious reasons, I'd prefer a local sale for the VPI.

What did you mount the Lowthers on, Marv? I was hankering to go SET lately, but i don't know what to do for cabinets.

I put them on OBs with the Lowthers on top and Eminence 15" betas on the bottom. The speakers were biamped with one cap on the Lowthers for high pass and a DCX2496 processor to a Crest CA2 amp for the woofers (and sub) on the bottom).

You could cook up a bass reflex or TL cabinet for those Lowthers. Tempted myself but I'm Back To Tweeters(tm)

A VPI Classic 4 in rosewood would be a gorgeous table and the last one you'd need to buy. Excellent option.

Nice choice Marv. I really like those Classic 4 tables and Rosewood has always been the best look for the Classic series.

Been wanting to move up the VPI line myself. I want the better feet/plinth/second arm option and 300rpm motor. I wonder if Soundstage direct or any of the bigger US dealers do trade ins from Canadian customers? I should email....

Yeah, I saw that. Not rosewood, but does include two great arms. According to Seth at Soundstage Direct, they only have three rosewood tables left, and he mentioned he may be getting one himself after me. That leaves one remaining. I really doubt VPI will offer something like this again given that the exotic woods are becoming unobtainable and how VPI has been on a cost cutting binge.

Thanks. SoundStage Direct offered $1200 for a trade in on the Classic 1. I'd rather reduce the price to that point for someone local.

    2 thoughts:

    1. Wtf pricing. This is bonkers. All items are ridiculously cheap.

    2. I might have to buy that damn table now.

Edit: someone please buy it. I have no money for this, ha-ha.

WTF! At a different time, I would have POUNCED on that table for that price. At this point in my life, I would MUCH MUCH rather it go to someone who is starting out on vinyl with their first table. I can't believe someone will have THIS level of turntable as their first table. This is a destination quality table for 90% plus of the audio population.

NO DAC AT ANY PRICE POINT WILL TOUCH THE SOUND OF THIS TABLE!

If someone local doesn't buy this soon. I WILL! Again, much much rather it go to a local, deserving person....that is the only intention I see for Marv to reduce it to this price. Total nice guy move!

@insidious meme , @OJneg , @LFF .... OR I'm calling some of my other friends personally and seeing if they want to buy this. I'd rather it go to a person on the forum here though.

I am local and have sent a PM on the VPI. That price is insane and the VPI would easily best the starter turntable I've used for years, a Technics SL-1800.
