Might just be it. Sennheiser didn't seem like the type to do massdrop to me but they did. Maybe it was to clear out stock?

I googled: Sennheiser HD 650 discontinued. Big hullabaloo about the HD650 and HD600 being discontinued. All of the hits were from around February 2015.

I have been suspecting that Sennheiser has been planning on discontinuing these headphones. One listing stating "discontinued" does not make me think that day has come.* Amazon is always selling out and then ordering more stuff. Too soon for me to think the sky is falling on these headphones. I will be keeping an eye on this possibility, though.

*Read some of those 2015 google links.

They only had 20 in stock 30 minutes ago.

...with more on the way. Interestingly, the stock remaining doesn't show up if I view it while logged in, presumably since I've already purchased it.

Twenty HD650s in stock on Amazon seems like a pretty healthy number. Amazon buys and sells items - then buys and sells some more.

They're really pushing the "Improved frequency response of 10 - 39,500 Hz (-10 dB)", listing it twice in the features and adding "for rich sound" the second time.

I used the tip of a box cutter and did 1 slightly deep cut on top then flipped it and did another to cut it out if this helps anyone.

I'm glad I managed to grab a pair of the HD650 in any case (unrelated to this, I just wanted to try them out). Even if it turns out this model isn't actually being discontinued, I really wonder what an improvement on the HD650 could be like.

Angled baffles, Fs down an octave. Done. Maybe stronger mangets for le attack speed.

I bought mine recently and the black box says exactly the same thing as yours. I was told they were the latest revision and I'm pretty sure it is. My baffles look the same as the current ones in Tyll's photo.

    +1 Then they'd be "perfect"!

I copied someone else's trick of padding out the back half of the pads to angle the cups a bit (they used foam, I used rolled up tissue). It brings the soundstage forward slightly so it's not so left-right and I don't get any noticeable negative side effects.

It would be a real tragedy if they discontinue them unless the successor is better than them in everyway, with not additional flaws of its own. And businesswise, it would seem wise to wait and see if people like the new one. At least I'm set, I've got a 650 and just bought a 580 as well.

If there's one big improvement i could make to the HD6x0 line, it would be to replace the squeaky, hard to adjust and clampy headband with HD800's perfection of a headband. Most expensive part in the headphones ($110 for replacement) my ass

The HD650 is an "evergreen" - discontinuing it would be stupid unless they're certain the follow-up product will be a hit. If they're not certain that the successor will be a hit it's best to keep both products in parallel and let things work themselves out naturally. That being said... companies aren't always smart and I've not been too impressed with either the HD700 or the stock un-modded HD800 to be honest.
