0% chance just a color thing. Its not massdrop's style to hype something like that. This is definitely a new headphone. I wish someone would just reveal already. If they make a good product I will buy it, this hype marketing does nothing for me.

 

Blacker housings make for blacker background.

 

Why would Sennheiser do that rather than just sell it themselves through their dealers that move exponentially more units than Massdrop? I predict new SKU, maybe with mass loading. Or maybe massdrop is the beta test?

 

don't underestimate massdrop's ability to move headphones. also with massdrop there are no waranties or returns, and products ship directly from the factory so costs are much lower.

 

you are missing the point. massdrop is a partner not a retail chain, they are offering companies an alternative means of direct distribution.

Sennheiser HD6X0 prices have been quite low recently. The price have been going up and down for years. Check out the "1 Year" or "Lifetime" price History.

I would think that if the Massdrop version is priced too low, Sennheiser runs the risk of (maybe) locking in the image of HD6X0 as budget headphones. Or at least making it harder to raise the price when they feel the timing is right.

i'd love it if they did more than just a color thing etc, but i'd say there's a close to 0% chance that its a whole lot more than a color thing, since there's nothing to really fix about the 6x0 driver unless you like design a whole new thing altogether. i doubt this is that.

besides, if they can get 6x0s out the door at a relatively low cost then that's already a pretty big win for most people, just not necessarily for people who already own the thing. that said, my pair is starting to look a little ghetto, but the 650 will always be my trapp queen.

 

Senheiser has been around since 1945 and is the 3rd most known name in headphones. The hd6x0 series has had a long history as senheiser's flagship models and their reputation is not at stake.

 

I sincerely hope this does not amount to a black 6x0 at a sale price. Even if they don't change the drivers, they can still work on the tuning. Whether that will be an improvement or not, hard to say.

I think I see how my previous wording could come across as different than I meant it to. When I posted:

Instead of using the words "budget headphones" I would have conveyed my meaning better if I had posted something like "lower priced headphones".

I have the highest opinion of the HD6X0. The HD650 is what got me into headphone listening. I basically listen to three headphones: HD650 (stock) HD650 (mod) and Fostex THX-00 (mahogany). I occasionally like to listen to my HD600. I also bought HD580 (black drivers and flat print) along with new Sennheiser earpads, a HD650 headband cushion and cable and HD600 grilles, a while back. I am looking forward to spending more time with them. These are the only headphones I own that I really care about.

If this Massdrop version turns out to be something that I desire, I will be getting those as well. I have been speculating on the new Massdrop version - like everyone else here.
