The Magni and Modi are basically Thor and Zeus teaming up to chuck thunderbolts compared to small furry rodents rolling around in the mud. Meh on Tyll's review. I purchased both of them because I like what I like. Same with movies, music and hardware. The sound signature of both Eikon and Atticus checks all my boxes. Almost fell for the Sony MDR-Z1R hype. I'm grateful for the objective folks here and not the HF white noise where everyone must like the latest and greatest because the audio gods proclaim it so (Chord Mojo, Z1R, Audio-gd).

 

Anyone try the Atticus or Eikon on the Mjolnir 2?

 

I hope reviews come in saying that Eikon is terrible with Mjolnir 2, because I bought ZDS instead of that. I'm a selfish person.

 

it might be a while before the Eikon loaner gets to me, but i'll be trying it out on the mjolnir 2. but i don't have a balanced cable with audeze mini-xlr connectors, which i should find or ask to borrow before the loaner arrives.

 

I'm a rando, but my Eikon is arriving in the next few days and I have a Mjolnir 2.

 

I have a stock ZMF balanced cable you can borrow, I'm very interested in your findings with the Mjolnir 2 as well.

 

Sometimes the hype is justified. I'm no shill and afaik, bought the first Z1R pair posted/commented at HF. Couldn't give less of a rats ass about hypes at this stage, but that also applies to my view of other models with Z in the name.

Still think it is pretty good and high on the closed design food chain, in several areas (not just sound).

I'm curious to read Tyll's review of it, although probably the measurements will result in the usual overreacting that buried other models.

But it could be interesting at least for the objective parts (build, comfort, etc).

Agree on the Mojo btw.

You'd be surprised at how many times I actually defended SBAF on HF, because I still think some people don't define the hobby or the whole communities. Many times in PMs, but also in public posts (that got deleted by mods, getting me warnings). I can send you all the screenshots if you want, at least of the PMs. Maybe some call recordings too, just in case. We can post them somewhere so everyone can enjoy.

I have to admit that it is clearly time to follow your advice tho, so I'll thank your post for the useful reminder.

I can see that the discussion of the Eikon and Atticus and indeed the wider site has suffered a grievous loss today. Don't let the door hit you in the ass.

I find that being terminally forgetful helps a lot with that. It's hard to maintain complete confirmation bias when you're not sure what you're supposed to believe.

BTW, did you post your impressions yet, the better to skew the rest of us?

 

I believe there to be a scale which is something like this:

Revealing/Fatiguing <---------------------------------------> Veiled/Smooth

An un-modded HD800 with SS amp I would place very far to the left. A HD650 I think is maybe a little bit right of center. The original LCD-2 quite far right.

Neither is right or wrong really, it's just a matter of taste, music and synergy. But it's really, really super-hard to make a headphone which is both super-revealing and detailed and at the same time super-smooth and easy to listen to for hours on end. Typically they come as out one way or the other, or as a compromise somewhere in the middle.

If the Eikon is more to the right than to the left that's just the way the headphone is, and if you like that or not would be a matter of taste. If you make direct comparisons to "sharper" sounding headphones it's quite possible that over a 10 minute session you will like the sharper headphone more, it has more wow factor. A bit like an over-saturated picture. But if you were to listen for 3 hours it might be the exact opposite, you might prefer a more laid-back presentation.
