Back in the day I think a coworker used to get All Music Guide and I'd look through it when I had a chance. I also used to love Rolling Stone and SPIN which would review some fringe stuff. I had a "free" RS subscription last year and it wasn't even worth that. By the third issue they went right into the trash.
Not the same, but this made me think of ~16 years ago when I didn't have the internet and the only way I found out about new music was to look at the liner notes of albums I loved and see the bands that were thanked, and then track down their releases. Wouldn't go back to that, but there's something magical about discovery when it's not just a matter of a few keystrokes.
