The album that just prompted me to think about this was "Night Drive" by Chromatics. Particularly noticeable transition "Night Drive" to "I Want Your Love". Ends up just sounding like crap out of good gear, not at all like analog sound, just like crappy noise. Other example that really springs to mind is Tyler, The Creator is guilty of this. "Igor's Theme".
Agreed. I was listening to something on Qobuz and the analog noise made me wonder if a cable had become partially disconnected. The noise went away on the next track. The added noise really annoyed me.
If the artist is using samples, the crackles may genuinely be there from the record they're sampling from. I think there's a good and bad way to use crackle - fills in an otherwise sparse mix and can prove a good way to dither and side chain against other elements to craft a particular aesthetic. J Dilla used this tactic on occasion. Sometimes it's fun to embrace the uncanny, sometimes it's just campy.
@E_Schaaf@Phantaminum valid point, and for sure hear where you are coming from. Just means I have to reserve listening to that stuff from my Porta Pros.
