I'm trying out a pair of 6DJ8 Amperex bugle boys. A little bit more air than the stock 6922's but a tad less bass. I would like to say that it is more holographic than stock, but I really can't at this moment, as it is fairly close to stock. My attempt at rolling with two Tung-Sol 6C8G's went nowhere other than transporting me to hiss city. Back to the CTH they go.
The more I look into it, the more it seems I'd need to spend $380+ to beat the stock tubes at what I personally am looking for.
A lot of the "tube reviews" focus on female vocalists and stuff like that, I mainly listen to electronic music. I looked more into it and have seen remarks that the EH 6922 (stock tube) is one of the best for electronic music at any price.
I'm giving it one more shot with a decent pair of tubes
Thing is this is for pc desktop so "big boy tube amp" is not really what I want, want small form factor with balanced I/O. 8.5" x 8.5" is about perfect size. Anything like this other than LP w/ balanced I/O thats better? Could maybe do deeper but not much wider
Also I have a youngen so having as little tube exposed as possible is best
I mean I can see something like Trafomatic Head 2 being built better than LP but does it actually sound thousands better? It doesn't seem to be that enthusiastically received at it's price point , and it's still a hybrid. But it would check the boxes I need.
Not that I've heard many holy grail tubes, but a lot of more experienced dudes will tell you don't waste time and money. Save for a better amp. I always have at least 2 sets of tubes though just in case. Going on 2 years with LP. have stock EH, JJ gold pin, and gold lions. They each serve their purpose, but best to stay out of the weirdo LP threads in other places IMO
I get what you're saying but the tube used does make a big sound difference in the LP.
The problem with "save for a better amp" is I haven't heard anyone actually offer an example of a significantly better sounding amp that fits my use case - small-ish form factor for PC desk with limited space, preferably partially or fully hidden tubes, and balanced I/O for PC noise rejection.
Well as far as PC noise you can kill that before it even reaches the dac. I have single ended/amps dacs as well as balanced without issue. Can't stop your young one from touching hot tubes. $200 tubes for a now $484 makes no sense. Get a bigger desk and then you have more amp options :)
If you like tube chasing though there's nothing wrong with that. There's eddie current, ECP and DNA amps I'd make room for if I made the jump. Bryson BHa1 used for $1k is probably awesome as well. No tubes
Try out some Siemens E88CC Grey Sheilds or A-Frames. Or some CCA if you can find a decent price. Check out this guy, euroklang on ebay he always has some for good prices. I have a pair of Siemens E88cc grey shields from him that I really enjoy with my Clears.
EC DSHA-3F. Small-ish and in another planet compared to Liquid Platinum, plus SS so no tube nervosa. Another option if you insist on tubes is the ECP T4.
Unfortunately Liquid Platinum exists in no-man's land and personally I'd rather listen to an Asgard 3 (I'm not making that up)
I'm just trying to be helpful but isn't almost everything a disaster with HD800 ? Never heard them. Asgard 3 is beast though. It gets 50% of my listening time against LP and SW51+
HD700 though right ? I'm coming from reference HD6xx with these amps and LCD2 when I want a short term change.
I wouldn't take it as hate, LP is not everyones cup of tea. I have never heard more expensive amps but from comparisons with stuff I know well I can see some folks sound preferences. Also the LP can be a pain in the ass with some low impedance headphones, high gain and volume issues. A lot of people rock out clears and utopias probably wouldn't be best with LP.
Honestly I don't like the Liquid Platinum at all. Tons of other amps that are way cheaper that I'd rather listen to. Never heard the Crimson, but talking to people who owned Crimson the LP is not close to the Crimson.
It's my opinion and I stand by it. What you need to do is hear more stuff and form your own opinion.
I would like to try more stuff there just ain't much that fits my oddball needs haha and I've tried most of it that did, other than schitt because hd800 owners said Schitt stuff (even tubed) had grainy treble and was a bad match
LP is by far best match I've found thus far that fits my use case.
SW51+ FTW. Looking forward to finally hearing one... mine is in the current batch being assembled. ogodei has two amps for sale in his Ampocalypse that are generally well liked with the HD800 series. EC ZDS and Woo WA5.
The wa5le comes the closest to what i would be looking for w/ Balanced I/O
& Chassis split up into 2 smaller pieces I could rearrange instead of 1 giant one.
And I knew about this one but the price is off the hook starting at $3700. A $484 LP and some premium tubes is still less than 1/5 the price of this, and I'd rather spend that much money on headphones etc. Don't want to > $2k on amp and do want balance I/O
