On a first cross-America road trip with a fellow Brit many years ago, we came across two great road signs.

The first, on the interstate in Nevada (?) stated: "State Penitentiary, do not pick up hitchhikers"

The other, apropos of the above post: "Do not pass." It was an empty freeway, my buddy slammed on the breaks, stopped right in front of the sign and deadpanned, "Now what?"

 

My favorite sign is from Beverly, MA. Not sure if it's still there. I was very high the first time I saw it, then laughed all the way back to Boston:

A sign from Blue Ball, PA, a real town. Love the way the sign tries to explain it away (but we all know what it means):

 

Grew up near there... within a 5 mi radius you have the towns of:
Blue Ball, Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Paradise, and finally when you're done... Smoketown

 

There was a town called f'ing in Austria until 2020. They actually had to rename the town (it’s called Fugging today), because after it became widely known on the internet, among other stuff the town signs were constantly stolen.

EDIT: Uhm, why does it say f’ing when displayed? Seriously? That’s not what I wrote. The town was called F u c k i n g.

 

I remember that stuff like that used not to happen. We were considered grown ups, and if we wanted to use bad language, we could use bad language. then f***king stars and stuff started to happen.

My guess is that nobody turned it on --- but perhaps it got turned on at some restore or software upgrade.

It's a ch**dish sytem: everybody knows what the words are. So it's also no big deal. When we don't give a f**k about something we don't give a f**k about it.
