They are likely running for a single payer system, which will lower quality and dramatically increase tax burden (but also cover everyone, which is good).

@Kunlun If they fund it properly and tax the right people and not put it all on the lower and middle class (lol) it could be up to current standards or at least close to it.

I think the primary issue would be available healthcare professionals.

@Mystic in terms of costs, it'll be a lot. Upper middle class and even upper class (except for the tiny 0.1%) already pay a lot of taxes. My total tax burden right now is a little above 50%. I recognize all the "privilege" as well as the hard work that lets me pay that and do well, but also: Holy crap.

As for quality of care, ha ha, no. It will be worse for the 60% of Americans who have decent insurance now. Giving basic coverage to the uninsured is no small thing, but whether it needs to be at the cost of good medical care for a majority is something that needs to be honestly debated, rather than covering over very hard choices and claiming single payer as a miracle panacea.

Keeping in mind that even something as clear and obvious as the value of having a doctor who knows you personally is just now beginning to be quantitfied in a way that the hospital conglomerates, HMOs , and insurance companies will even have to notice at all in their ideas of healthcare:

You make some great points. It would be nice if our politicians would start taking this more seriously on both sides of the aisle. The system as it is now is not sustainable forever.
