    If was going to do lead i'd do half lead and half sand just to not make it top heavy. I have a 90 pound fury monster running around here though so you might not have that safety concern.

    I'll probably do both sand and shot, mixed, just to maximize mass-loading.

    They're short stands to raise them 15cm above my desk, so the heavier the better.

    I guess I'll ask at the local weapons place, everyone tells me they are extremely unpleasant people ...

    I would go with sand all the way. It's not just mass loading, the sand dissipates energy better by allowing micro-vibration from the grains.

    I would at least just try sand first and then go with lead if you have to.
