Currently want new pads both for a bigger opening and to reduce some of the sharp and edge. There's also way too much treble in the soprano range. Bass is slightly sloppy and loose, borderline slappy, also needs to be a more textured. There seems to be a little bit of sound missing around both lower and upper mids as well. Also sounds closed in.
Other things could improve slightly like staging/imaging, depth of sound, resolution, tone mids and up, plankton, etc but IMO none of these were bad and are probably limited by the headphone/driver. Can't add resolution that isn't there so to say.
Sounds like you also should consider different amps -- specifically decent non-sterile power amps. Many symptoms indicate the driver not driven optimally to your liking. I can think of a couple of amps that makes 6se that way.
.. or sell 6se quickly lol. Maybe that's not your cup of tea. Like hd6x0 did to me.
(If you don't find a hint of wow or wow-ish potential, I sincerely recommend to do so)
Have heard enough modded HE6's, especially the last one from E_Schaaf at meet, to know that HE6se has the potential to get where I want. Just needs to actually get there first.
Not sure if Phonitor X would be considered sterile or not to SBAF at large, but so far it's pretty close overall to 3F in my opinion. Auteur was good on it too.
Isn’t his modded 6 dtiven by firstwatt? Phonitor could be limited in current. Overpowering via poweramps greatly benefit 6s beyond calculations. At an only fraction of good head amps.
Maybe sending your 6se to e_shaaf’s place (with a fee) could be the straightforward. Seriously
Also I kinda suspect low thd spec may disservice. I don’t know recent phonitors much though. To me 6se with richer harmonics has more synergy. Auteur less depend on such traits.
You read my mind. After phonitor yesterday I'm looking at first watt as an option now... except I still want an ss amp that works with other headphones and isn't a large space heater.
I hear you about the midrange, not as robust as the HD650. Better bass you'll have to get a different amp. It'll tighten it up and remove much of the "slappiness" (which is what I heard from a single Vidar too). Swapping pads will make a difference, not as much as the amp IMO.
