Thought vi/vim was outdated and obsolete enough by any means. In 2024, I use neo-vim and love it. Damn.

I use Sublime as my main text editor, mostly cause it's on every platform and is native. but I am kinda jealous of my coworkers that are vim gurus. I can and do use vim, but only for minor edits to individual files

Even vim itself still is wonderful editor. The efficiency of all those keyboard commands has never been surpassed.
Of course, there is stuff that a modern IDE does better, but for most single file editing, I still use vim.

@Cspirou Was frustrated with MS Word for decades. I feel like to gain a better control over my document. Also gets along with Git well! Eye opening.

@MisterRogers To GC-addict like me, Rust encouraged low-level thinking, but not like C++ but rather much more elegant and motivating.

@Thad E Ginathom Thoroughly enjoying to separate markup and content. But still need pdf preview as a noob!

I actually started my dissertation with MS Word and I was getting overwhelmed with all the formatting that I switched to a LyX template one of my grad school friends made. It might have annoyed my advisor not being able to have revisions on an MS Word doc but it saved me an immense amount of time and stress.

Now I try to make docs with LaTeX/LyX all the time. I’m currently working on a recipe layout

Yes, I've been using a mini PC using AMD 5500U chip as my eh... mini PC, and this thing really works well! And I do remember there were performance leaps from Zen 2 to Zen 4. When people talk about how great Apple's new chips are, actually AMD ones are quite close

@Vansen Yup. Si-powered MBPs are tops esp when pwr and mobility are needed. I also have m3max MBP.. it's a killer portable + serious workstation and the batt life under super heavy comps is awesome..

@joch Mostly very smooth and thumbs up. Some open source is harder to find (for me anyway). For example, couldn't find FOSS equivalent to foobar2k in terms of func/refine.

It's pretty much ALL about grants & funding - which is one of science's great conundrums, because to be truly innovative usually means moving outside current paradigms, but for a research proposal to be widely viewed as potentially successful usually means staying within them.

And now she's achieved great success outside academia, academia is irrelevant to her - which I'm sure is very satisfying. Honorary professorships anywhere she likes, but her company will attract such funding that she can keep doing what she wants.

Its opening theme "Hero", linked below, has also become my current favorite. Despite being densely layered across the entire spectrum (with bass going down to 30hz), RS2x off my rig manages to reproduce it impressively. Delivers a remarkable sense of space, detail, and engagement. Given the rich auditory information, I feel more connected to the song's narrative.

The Magnius was the first thing I ever bought from schiit I sent right back. Flat 2d boring sounding chip amp. The midgard probably destroys it and most likely Jotunheim 2 should be looking over it's shoulder. I could be wrong though, would love to hear it, but I already have 4 headamps.

Schumann's Kreisleriana is one of the pieces I became obsessed with over the years. Her recording bowled me over—what a surprise! It's not my favorites (Perahia/Kissin) or the greatest (Cortot, 1935). But: She had something new to say, it was fully worked out, and it was persuasive beyond its own terms. That combination is the mark of a true artist. And Schumann might really have had that in mind.
