I thought all hifi salesmen knew the rule: louder, unless already too loud, always sounds better.
I think it's a reasonable idea that increases in level which are too small for us to perceive as changes in volume may be perceived as changes in quality. I do not know if it has actually been shown.
Or conversely, people who don't often listen loudly would like gear that doesn't need to be cranked to concert-in-a-can levels to sound halfway nice :)
