It isn't. I was debating whether to respond but while it has merit as an *entertainment* piece, speaking so authoritatively on audiophoolism as a manifestation of obsessive-compulsive PD is really, really irresponsible. Yes that may well be the case for some, but patholigising a whole population is f'ing stupid.
I'm not saying that the entirety of ORFAS is free from issues; that people go so far to achieve incremental improvements speaks to that. What I take issue with is how someone who seems to only have a surface-level understanding of psychology speaks so assuredly of personality disorders when it's a hell of a lot more nuanced than ticking boxes.
I suppose it comes down to how "literally" you take these cross-domain analogies. I recently read an author who was using Einstein's theory of relativity in an effort to explain time management skills...
However, I am willing to say that *something* is going on in 'High End', and yes even a mere laypersons "wiki" use of OCPD is explanatory to some extent, even if your right in it is not strictly a proper psychological diagnosis.
The thing about hobbies is there's a relative dearth of research into it outside of, say, gaming as an addiction that's relevant in modern context. What irked me about the article was that it's revealing of how very pop culture mental health issues have become.
Also, irritation not directed at you earlier, @crenca. Mostly grumpy cuz article and scalp sore :))
@Lyander I get your response on trivializing serious psychological issues, however I don't think that the author was doing so. He was merely using the simplified description of the illness to point out several phenomena in the hi-end community he finds morbid. At least my takeaway isn't that everyone there has OCPD.
Yup they even said as much towards the end. I'm just grumpy because I see people diagnosing THEMSELVES with similar things just for their own benefit way too often, and others applying derogatory labels to groups of people (as here) as a way to demean them.
