Funny thing is I always feel imbalanced when start to listen, after controlling knob left or right a bit, feel better, knob converges to a certain sweet spot after a few tracks. That's actually the exact center. Now I am pretty sure my ears/brain are not time-invariant. They need some time to stabilize.
I sometimes use a VST plugin to adjust left/right balance. My hearing is not symmetric. Has been different in each ear for all my life. Imaging pulls slightly left. But when I play with left/right balance I end up with it right at center. It ends up sounding wrong if I give the right ear more volume and try to get the imaging dead center.
All amplifiers used to have a balance control. Then it became the audiophile thing not to. No balance knob, no tone knob. As if all rooms are identical and all ears are perfect. Maybe my hearing loss is karma for buying into that bullshit over twenty years ago!
