"Pee Wee Russell is God" — Kingsley Amis. (It's not sacrilegious for me to quote it.) Amongst conventional players, Buster Bailey had shine and sweetness. And I can't not mention Benny Goodman; even though he didn't play with feeling, he's one of the greats. Incidentally, the soprano sax sounds like a sax whose grandmama was a clarinet.
I'm a huge Giuffre fan. It's almost like he charted his own genre, not just his own version of what "free" could mean. I particularly like Travelin' Light and Easy Living.
Pee Wee plays very inside on Ask Me Now (would be curious to explore more of him), but it's great.
Thank you, everyone, I very much appreciate the recommendations. I've listened to them briefly, am delighted with them, and look forward to going through them properly in the days to come (I have a nice, big qobuz playlist now!).
Pee Wee Russell and David Murray are immediately appealing, as is Giuffre. It's been a while since I listened properly to Out to Lunch! and while I know Goodman and many of the other, old greats like Bechet and Johnny Dodds and Jimmie Noone (I lived in New Orleans for a good few years), I didn't know of Buster Bailey. Great stuff! Thank you all so much.
