And I know, it's likely that I'm just accepting Yggdrasil's upsampling as "normal" but of the handful of other DACs I've had in the chain, nothing else has sounded as unfuckedwith as Yggdrasil.
not trying to be contrarian, but I tried HQPlayer, too, in trial, and found it sounded like there was saran wrap over my speakers (using some of the recommended filters/sampling rates). strange plasticky tinge to the midrange, and also a weird detachment from the soundstage. I dunno. I could be full of shit. It's more than likely. No, probably.
Hqplayer has a filter that should sound identical to the one built into your Yggdrasil. Then there are a bunch of other choices. The biggest gains come from filters that make use of what Yggdrasil can't - more time and more cpu/memory.
With HQ Player, I've found that filter and modulator/dither combinations are really rate, system, interface, taste dependent and there's tradeoffs (stage depth vs treble behavior vs timbre etc). Schiit MB stuff sounds better on its own - occasionally working with MSYNC or XTR LP with NS9 for AES at 192 is good. The 2541, Denafrips Ares, RME, Holo Audio are often better with HQ player upresing.
All my upsampling right now is hardware-forced (CXN), but now I’m curious what Roon would do to that data before sending it along. Sounds like an experiment for me this week.
