your room will be an important component of the speaker listening experience. How good is your room and how much flexibility you have for speaker placement and tweakings... answering this can help answer the question speaker or headphones.... and do you want to share the listening experience with others? myself I would definitly go for salk song 3!
That's were I am probably heading despite the need to ship them all the way to Europe and pay customs.
The Song 3s were shown with Yggdrasil Rag at Newport with great impressions. Their woofer goes deep down to 33Hz with 88db sensitivity and 8ohm impedance!
Schiit will probably show them again at RMAF soon. Hoping that trusted SBAF ears will hear them at some point.
With active speakers I would lose the Yggdrasil-Rag combo magic... can't have that.
My Monitor Audio GX100 have served me well these past 4 years. I also considered wide band driven speakers like the Omega Super Alnico but these may not be best match for orchestral classical music.
Can't go wrong with Salks! In a former life I was playing classical professionally and love the SAMs for that. They buck the traditional notion that single driver speakers can't do large classical well IMO. But I can't imagine the Salk 3's not being stellar for this.
Philharmonic 3. Best speakers Dennis (guy who designed Salk song3s) knows how to make. Alternatively, Phil Slims with an Yggdrasil and the future schiit 2 channel gear. Sell the Ragnarok.
@ricercar - I was so going to buy the Omegas SAMs, but Shaizada's comment on your thread about not keeping up with complex orchestral music somewhat dampened my enthusiasm.
Thanks @zerodeefex - Dennis' Phil 3 are huge!! Wife factor red alert! The slims look really good ... lowish 85db sensitivity is the only con.
Selling my Ragnarok won't be easy though considering what a game changer it was with the Yggdrasil!
Yeah, the oddly shaped Phil 3 would probably become a rocking horse for my 2 year old besides taking half my room!
Song 3s are enticing due to the extended low frequency of that one of a kind woofer. I might miss my bookshelf's imaging but everything is a compromise and tonality is my main priority at present.
