It seems to sound a little harsh. Is my ears or the headphone that has changed. Probably its my ears.

I think I'll get the HD600 out of its box.

Anyway, the 800 is physically a little uncomfortable until I can get a new headband cushion for it.

mine has always bothered my Klingon head after long enough wear. A long time ago I added two cushions to the underside of the headband so it wouldn't rest of the crown of my head, like the 6xx series has...I should do that again

@Thad E Ginathom may be the pads are worn out and need replacement. Sometime the power also has lot to do with it. Check if you have recently plugged in any SMPS or something nearby the power socket of amplifier.

That's a good idea. I'm inclined, anyway, to try something else other than the stock padding: it has lasted very badly.

But it is actually the sound that bothered me. True: they are currently only plugged into the headphone socket of my MOTU M4.

I don't have a working headphone amp, but used to enjoy them from my Cyrus integrated.

I have not changed any power component recently. There is a huge hotchpotch of equipment plugged in. Very non-audiophile. So it could have been a bad day for that stuff.

Or a bad day for the computer. That certainly happens.

Sad age-related fact: bad days for my ears happen much more often

@SoupRKnowva, the large, ear-enclosing cups of the HDs are a winner for me, but the downside (literally, haha) is the interaction where they meet the lower jaw. And I sometimes wish they didn't.

But HD800 bothers me less in that respect than HD600 did.
