It sounds like a turbo DT880, topple mt.beyer make the midbass bass flat extend the subbass, add some warmth and air and give it amazing imaging/separation. Only thing "lacking" when compared to 580 is that it doesnt have that romantic sennheiser tonality, but nor does it have the robotic sound of the DT880. Pretty sure this will be my headphone of choice for 95% of content.
I'll have to keep an eye out. Me like separation/detail over a lot of other sonic qualities.
Gotta say though, looking at the website, the choice of the photographer to detach the cable and highlight the right and left cup jacks as opposed to the 1/4/1/8 inch plug really threw me off. For a second I thought they were banana plugs and the cans were meant to be driven with a speaker amp.
Funnily enough It actually has characteristics I typically associate with planars, namely the mostly flat but extended bass, somewhat laid back upper mids and a lot of energy in the air region. If someone told me it was a planar I would believe them. But it is indeed a dynamic driver. Super impressive for what I assume is a driver of their own creation.
It does not have a wide soundstage at all, its nearly the same width wise as HD6xx series, but the imaging and depth are both outstanding and significantly better than the 6xx et all. HD800 would win in soundstage size, but in imaging pretty sure S5x would hold its own. I would say the S5x is more accurate than the HD800 because it does not sound artificially wide the way the 800 can.
The bass extension probably has to do with the size of the driver. If you had a small ortho driver like the size of the 6xx series, I wonder what it would sound like
