They are VERY different than my previous 300B + Altec hybrid setup. Not very close in terms of detail or microdynamics and 'liveness', which the Altecs have in spades.
However, they have great transparency and soundstage, a laid back presentation, very good bass extension and bass detail (at my moderate listening levels) and are very easy to live with (small, just a power cord). I find them musically satisfying; what else can you say?
Homebrew Valencia clones using Great Plains drivers. They were my first set of horns and I'd never experienced anything that sounded so uncompressed and lively. That said, the system with all the supporting gear was essentially impossible for anyone else in the family to operate, which was an issue.
I've struggled similarly; even being relatively simple, tuner/roon+DAC/preamp/amp/speakers, a "stereo docent" for my speaker rig would be helpful when I'm not around.
I have about 30" behind them and the bass is very fine. Buchardt does offer different DSP tunings for the internal crossover including a cardiod pattern for near-wall placement. I haven't tried it; it supposedly sounds good but limits the the in-room low end output.
@yotacowboy - the stereo serves as TV output as well. My 22yo son wanted to watch a movie with his gf when we were away. Even with help he just could not get it to fire up (he had changed some inputs). Ended up turning up the in-TV speakers which had never been used. And he was just fine with the resulting sound.
My wife enjoys music (but taps out at Sun Ra) and likes how the rig sounds but she would NEVER have set something like this up on her own. Takes a special kind of weirdo.
