I subscribed to National Review in August for two reasons. 1) I enjoy Michael Brendan Dougherty's columns (and Philip Klein's). And, yes, it's noteworthy that neither has been with NR for very long. 2) It's an election year, and I want to see how the conservative establishment covers Mr Trump. NR is better now than at any time during Rich Lowry's lamentable tenure as editor (1997–).
@Claritas I haven’t been too impressed with the NR. I personally found their articles to be way too biased. Then again, the ads in the NR is super aimed for the boomer crowd. At least Reason and Harper’s they have variety on the articles so it’s not always about politics.
Harper’s is as far left I will go, because at least they’re not wacky and willing to call out the BS on their side. For a low $23 per year fee you can have access to their archives going back to the 1800s. Tons of gold in there IMO.
If I was in America, I'd buy The New Yorker... for the cover, the typography, the cartoons. I think it was they who gave us "On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.
OK, the cartoons are on instagram. But I'd like them on real paper.
@YMO You've hit on a general problem with Rich Lowry's editorship. NR used to be a conservative publication. During the Bush years, Lowry turned it into a Republican publication. That's something completely different. At least it's been strongly critical of Mr Trump in a pretty fair manner. I don't read the obviously biased articles (2/3ds–3/4s of the articles).
@Thad E Ginathom Because you mentioned the New Yorker's typesetting, I'm guessing you know that the typeface is Williams Caslon. For anyone who wants to understand why someone would design a new Caslon, https://ilovetypography.com/2010/07/26/reviving-caslon-the-snare-of-authenticity/. It has broad applications for typography. The typeface Times Ten identifies and corrects a different problem with digital type.
