The outer insulation of the head-phone-end dual wires is splitting and falling apart.
Can I use shrink tube? It would have to go over connector, which looks like it would need 8mm to clear, and shrink to hold 3mm tightly. Looks like 2:1 wouldn't do that.
Friend with an HD800 basically just taped over it. Heatshrink might be a bit finicky cuz yeah, it seems like you may need 4:1 or so? Not sure how easily obtained that can be for you.
I had no idea what self amalgamating tape was before just now. Neat.
Fwiw the inner wires seem fairly hardy at least. The HD800 I borrowed for a few weeks had them just poking through and, while I was babying the headphones, they gave me no trouble whatsoever.
Might be worth investing in a custom cable? Could salvage the connectors and use a fancy OCC Litz braid for improved sound quality, haha.
@Koth Ganesh had a collection of cables. When I bought the headphones off him, I didn't like the custom one fitted so he searched the stock cable for me. But he has moved on the turntables and speakers, and got rid of all his headphone stuff
Yes, self-amalgamating tape is *very* neat. No house should be without a roll :)
Oh, and /fancy/ cable not required, as you might guess. Even if it works I probably couldn't hear it. Had to glue a hearing aid back together last night!
