Reaper seems to be the go-to choice for a free DAW.

If you're just looking for music playback, then you don't need a DAW to use Sonarworks.

There are several players that can use the various Sonarworks plug-in formats for either Windows or OS X.

On OS X and Windows you can use J-River Media Center. For OS X you can run the Audio Unit version of Sonarworks with Audirvana. On Windows there are "adapters" that will allow you to run the Sonarworks .VST plug-in with Foobar2000. Roon is supposed to get plug-in support for this sort of thing in the not very distant future.

And then, if you're willing to play around a bit, you can use tools like Audio Hijack or Loopback to configure almost any player to use plug-ins via a virtual-patch board. This is a lot more complicated, but I have, for example, gotten the native OS X Tidal player to work with Sonarworks via Loopback and Apple's "Audio Unit Lab".

Although 1.3 came with a bit of DSP, VST's seems like dead in the water. I feed jRiver with a stream (WASAPI) from Roon which allows me to run the VST's I want, but of course it's not optimal.

On OsX I used soundflower and AU lab to run sonarworks system wide. I decided just to use it for mixing after listening for a while, don't like the loss of sound stage and detail for regular listening.

This guide worked for me, just substitute sonarworks for the eq
