Finally got a hold of a pair of these and must say they are a worthy upgrade, especially to those who have owned/heard the original HD800s. My friend wanted a pair too but changed his mind so I have an extra.

I feel that it's not only sonically better but the build quality is better as well. And the black matte is sick and I think it will make it less prone to paint chipping. It does fit slightly different than the original. Not in a bad way, just different.

Secondly, it comes with both standard 1/4" cable and 4-pin balanced XLR cable. It also comes with a USB stick that contains the manual and frequency response.

For those that felt the HD800s were too shrill or harsh, this should address that complaint. There is also more presence in the low/mids which should please many. There may be a small segment of HD800 enthusiasts that might find these slightly muddy at the highs, but I think it results in a nice balance. What I am saying is that these are not LCDs now; they're still HD800s, they're just a little more forward and balanced.

For me, the HD800s/HD800S are the best sub $2K headphone that you can run with a reasonably priced system. They're fairly easy to drive, especially, when you compare them to AKG K1000 or HE-6. Still burning these in so will provide more insight, but so far find them to be worth the extra money if you're looking at buying new or if your HD800s are starting to age.

Includes: HD800S headphones, stock cable, balanced 4 pin cable, USB drive, case/carton

$1,450 + PP fees and shipping. New poster here, but have Head-Fi and Audiogon feedback.

Wow, the last guy at least bothered to introduce himself and make one fluff comment before posting a FS listing. You aren't even pretending to join the community.

Ummm... I have plenty of colleagues that are members of this site and recommended that I join since we talk about audio gear all day. I actually dislike Head-Fi so I thought I would check this out.

I am highly engaged in the Seattle area headphone groups so I would hold judgment before making assumptions.

    I haven't even posted these to Head-Fi.

Aside from simple etiquette, we aren't really about our classifieds section in the first place.

Well, you're more than happy to fly out to Microsoft and come speak to me in person.... I'd be more than happy to share more technical thoughts. This is also a classifieds ad section, so I generally wouldn't post anything but the condition and price.

If you want to fly out to the Redmond campus of MSFT, I'd be more than happy to talk more technically about the difference between the Super Dupont HD800 and these HD800S. Think this is more effective at flattening out the treble spike, I would upload the frequency graph but it's not worth my time.

I don't know if it's because your exports are shrinking by 15.6% in March and that is what's making you super confrontational, but it's a nice day here for a Monday so I'm going to go enjoy it.

@The_206: None of what you just said has anything to do with this FS listing and the fact that you didn't introduce yourself. You broke the rules (be it on purpose or not), so there's reason people are angry.

Still would be interested to hear your thoughts on this. The increased bass distortion is what killed it for me (based on brief auditions).

Chill guys, just a little light trolling to get a newbie in line. No need to lynch him over what is probably an innocuous mistake.

Would be interesting to see what your opinion was like if you had compared them before these measurements surfaced.

True that . I never heard the HD800S before the measurements surfaced. In situations like these I always wonder if it would have been as obvious without the measurements or if the expectation bias influenced me during listening. I doubt that I would've focused on the bass when I compared the HD800 vs HD800S without the measurements.
I admit that I listened at rather loud volumes (I'm guessing around 85-90db) when I compared my SD modded (I removed the other mods and used my new earpads) HD800 to the HD800S. At loud volumes the bass sounded much muddier on the HD800S, while the HD800 stayed pretty clean for the most part. Still, I heard the HD800S on 2 occasions and always left with the feeling that the bass was more distorted on the HD800S.
(Keep in mind that I'm annoyed by the distortion of the bass/midrange driver in my UERM (2nd and 3rd order is audible at most listening levels, throughout bass and midrange), bass distortion on HD600, bass/midrange distortion on my B2s (similar to UERM), ...)

Even then I would easily take the stock HD800S over the stock HD800 (and probably the HD800SD, too. The HD800SD is still brighter than the HD800S.)

$1450 + PP fees + shipping? I bought my HD800S brand new from Meier Audio (an authorized Sennheiser dealer) for $1390, free PP fees, free international shipping, tax-free. Personally I'm not gonna bash you for your first post being a FS listing, but if you're gonna sell your shit, we don't take kindly to flippers around here.

Hmm, don't know if it was just my measurement setup but I only managed to excite that bass distortion closer to 100dB (where it rose to the ~5% we see from others), at 90dB it was around 2-2.5% in the second harmonic @ 20Hz.
