To the android guys: Which app do you use for playing music with an external DAC? Been comparing UAPP and Neutron for a bit... Nov 30, 2018

Neutron - UAPP differences: agreed, holy shit, the difference is not subtle. I think what I'm hearing (using Dragonfly Black & UE900s) is with UAPP, dynamics are compressed and transients are slow. Pretty confident I have all additional processing turned off before everything is sent to the DAC - but Neutron is nonetheless rebuilding my 16/44 FLACs to 32-bit, ie its output is NOT bit-perfect.

@GoodEnoughGear that *might* be it, but I'm pretty sure I had all that switched off (and Follow Source Frequency, which the author in a forum post says should leave tracks entirely unmolested, switched on), yet 32 bits were apparently still being presented to the Dragonfly. I'll test more today.

@bixby @Serious it seemed the opposite to me, I think because the effect on dymamics and transients made it seem like UAPP's FR was tilted warmer. Maybe my particular chain...

From Neutron, UE900s (quad BA with an upper mid to lower treble hole) seems brighter, modded HFW A1 (single DD, more neutral) seems slightly warmer. I think increased dynamics & speed are responsible. Settings are such that both players should be passing data unaltered to the USB DAC. Hmm...

Did you try UAPP? How did you feel about it?
This is just for getting the best sound on a portable rig. I normally use a Wyrd and some day I will ditch USB completely, but this is for a GO.

DeadBeef... but my mobile listening is very much more convenience than critical, and I only really bother with the external DAC stuff for experimenting.

I never told SBAF, but my CRT's PSU was broken for a long time and it wouldn't turn on. Finally got around to it and fixed it now.

I have to say 1440i at 155Hz feels like the way it was meant to be used. And the black levels and motion clarity are just glorious coming from my LCD.

Not surprised randos are asking stupid questions given how difficult it is to wade through BS in threads. On CS information was much denser.

At least the moderators keep an eye on the randos better than before. Nothing against the randos, simply a matter of bad experiences with randos who expect certain things.

You can always add a tweeter, but matching the sensitivity might not be easy without a horn or a high efficiency ribbon. I wouldn't want to do that though.

Yes, don't underestimate your own country. After WW2 the best German scientists and engineers were transported to the USA (Operation Paperclip). Nazis had a lot of bad ideological leaders, but their short-lived success floated on these brilliant people.

I also doubt that it sounds better with the cork. Too much 1kHz with the cork. (Just guessing here, I have not tried it with the cork yet. I also don't have the original metal rings in my HD800 anymore - I am using felt rings instead)

Just as an update: The original metal rings may not be ideal but I'm not sure if no ring is very good either. I wonder if the extended baffle has to do with the peaks (and dips) in the high frequency region. My plate coupler doesn't show the differences as clearly.
