I never liked Flaming Lips and my long held impression has been confirmed by their tribute to Bowie tonight on Colbert.

Space Oddity was more about lights on the clowns costume than a real musical performance.

    Over and out!

They were the real deal from 1986 to about 2002, then they fell off the rails pretty hard. I did like The Terror quite a bit though. But Wayne Coyne has lost his way in most respects.

I'm glad they had a run, lots of folks like them. I am late to the game. Pretty bad though tonight.

Yeah, I wouldn't judge them by any current performances. If you want to give them a fair shake, check out the albums Clouds Taste Metallic and/or The Soft Bulletin. Those albums are their high points.

I remember seeing them at the Palace in L.A. In like 1994, opening for Lush. That was quite a show.

Lush! The Gala Album was a really interesting piece and resonated with me. The better the system the better it sounded.

disagree. those albums were the start of their downfall IMO.
having seen the Lips live multiple times in small venues around 1986, their first EP and two albums remain epic raw punk psych fuzz.
including the amazing song "One Million Billionth..." which still gives me chills like the fog machine gloom and blaring amps ripping apart the bar...

Sorry, but this thread reads like a blueprint for hipsters and haters. Here is the thing about the Flaming Lips, and why I still respect them even when I hate their shit sometimes: They have nearly always been about the bleeding edge of "sounds, and f**k you, I don't really care what you think," which is hard to sustain.

I have seen them live numerous times and listened to just about all of their music, yes, including zaireeka in true 4.0 surreal surround. People who love old lips and complain that Wayne has "gone crazy" recently ignore that WAYNE HAS ALWAYS BEEN CRAZY. I entered during Clouds and Soft Bulletin, so I love that over the rest, but I know people who entered before and hate the later stuff, and people who started at Yoshimi, and find the older stuff inaccessible.

I am not saying any of the above posts is wrong, most of them I agree with. I just admire that the Lips are always about making a shit ton of varied sounds, and I admire that they have something for just about anyone. I also admire that they really don't give any fucks what we think and are still around. Most bands lose their moxie by now.

Some would argue that that distinction belongs to their Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots release. And that one belongs squarely in the Wayne Coyne era. But their show production is a major part of the band's hallmark presence. It's not for everyone, but their underlying music carries everything.

Count me in as saying Yoshimi is their best album. The album after that was ok, but not exceptional.

I saw them in 2006 at OKC with all the theatrics, but it was still glorious. I'm with @aufmerksam: crazy has been their guiding star since.

And I at the 2013 Bottlerock Festival in Napa Valley. Everyone enjoyed the experience, including Wayne and the band, and for me it was the highlight of the 5 day concert venue. Memorable.

But yeah, At War with the Mystics borders on the ordinary, and their latest, The Terror, is just too experimental, even for me. That's prolly the Lips style that bixby was exposed to on Colbert.

I guess it is just his off key singing that got to me, hahaha

Looks like Wayne's aquamarine iridescent suit has gotten a little too threadbare to remain on tour. I wondered about that... Also 'pears like he mayhaps put on just a wee bit of weight, which also would explain the change of outfit. Or maybe that's just his Colbert special. A huge venue, y'know. ;)

It does sound like Wayne's pipes may be blown, or at least a little road weary. Ruh Roh.

But a tribute to David Bowie? That's the first fail. At least for me.
