    Jotunheim Technical Measurements

    The data presented were collected as follows:

    1. PrismSound dScope III, picoscope 5243B
    2. 300 and 30 ohm loads used for measurements
    3. Balanced cables Canare L-4E6S starquad with Neutrik XLR connectors
    4. Unbalanced cables DH Labs Silver Sonic Air Matrix RCA (for picoscope)
    5. Vaunix Lab Brick USB hub
    6. 0 dB gain @ 0.775 Vrms 0 dBu except as noted for square wave measurements
    7. Jotunheim gain switch set to Low
    8. Jotunheim gain knob at approximately 3:00

    Reference:
    0.775 Vrms @ 30 ohms is 20 mW producing approx 101 dB SPL in HE-500 with sensitivity of 89 dB/mW
    0.775 Vrms @ 300 ohms is 2 mW producing approx 101 dB SPL in HD650 with sensitivity of 98 dB/mW

    Highlights:
    Delightfully transparent to my ears
    Seamless connectivity options
    Small footprint
    Unbelievable price considering exemplary performance, both auditory and measured

    Notes:
    Industry standard is A-weighted measurements, which can hide noise at low frequencies. These are unweighted measurements unless otherwise noted. Schiit publishes A-weighted specs to remain comparable to other manufacturers specifications. I would note that Jotunheim's unweighted measurements are better than many other vendors A-weighted specifications.

    editorial - I believe there is a tendency to focus too much on numbers such as THD attempting to reduce a complex topic to a single number representing a sort of goodness rating. Graphs can present far more data conveying a better understanding of the measurement over a range of frequency, levels, etc.

    Extended frequency response to 1 MHz, 2Vpp with 300 Ω resistive load:

    These measurements are time averaged over 45 to 60 minutes for higher frequency resolution. The right channel appears less noisy due to a longer averaging time.

    Additional note: these measurements were obtained with a custom 4 pin headphone cable to load resistors and then to oscilloscope input.

    Is this the new O2 amplifier? J/K, these measurements are phenomenal! I would love to hear some more impressions from you.

    (Currently listening to Wyrd->Gungnir Multibit->Jotunheim->HD650m) <-Seriously good sound!

    Love all the measurements, would you be willing to do Single ended in balanced out to compare to the balanced in balanced out ones? I think there's quite a few people out there planning on using this with the Modibit...or maybe its just me.

    @schiit wasnt kidding about it being the best measuring topology theyve seen

    The completely Balanced vs. completely Unbalanced measurements represent the two extremes in data likely to be measured on the Jotunheim. Unbalanced input with Balanced output will likely be very close but slightly worse than the completely Balanced measurements. Balanced input with Unbalanced output will likely be very close but slightly better than the complete Unbalanced measurements.

    Given the likely similarity of mixed balanced / unbalanced connectivity options with the bal/bal and unbal/unbal, and the time necessary to setup, calibrate, measure, verify data, document and post data I opted to measure the extremes. The above data represents approximately two days of effort.
