    Hi all,

In light of the virus going around, I'd like to ask the portion of this community involved in the current loaners to please disinfect the loaner units to the best of your abilities during these times. Obviously, stay within reason and don't break anything doing this.

At this current time, I have also decided not to start any new loaners for the foreseeable future. Suggestions for gear will still be taken into consideration however, so if there's something you want to hear don't hesitate to post about it in the suggestions thread.

    Stay safe all!

    Greetings all,

After some discussion with the staff, we've decided to tentatively reopen the loaner program. However, this will be in a somewhat limited manner; i.e. being pickier about members allowed (details in each relevant thread, but maybe restricted to just friends only with contributors allowed on a case-by-case basis), smaller participant lists, and other measures.

Part of this decision was made because the virus will likely die by the time it reaches the next member. I do ask that you practice due diligence when receiving parcels; use gloves when handling and use a mask since we will still be requiring members to use signature release. Spraying down the package with a disinfectant of some kind may also be prudent prior to opening.

Stay safe everyone, and take care of your health!

Notes about loaners and COVID from a biochemist at Stanford.

    • The virus dies on a surface within 3 days (likely sooner), so by the time you get any package on a loaner tour, the contents inside the box will have been quarantined and the virus will be dead.
    • The outside box is handled right before getting to you, so it would be good to spray it the outside of the box with bleach and use gloves to open the outer box. The contents, however are safe
    • The virus does not spread via your ears so you do not need to be worried about this. it spreads via mouth, nose and eyes. So iems are safe to use on a loaner, but should e wiped down with alcohol prior to use just to be safe.
    • Handoffs in person are the biggest risk for loaners because the virus hasn't been quarantined in shipping. This is honestly a slight risk, and is up to you whether you want to take it or not. The person handing it off to you could be infectious without symptoms yet or asymptomatic. And then there could be virus alll over the loaner item. So in person hand offs, while nice, are a risk.
    • Otherwise, with some simple precautions, loaners during the COVID pandemic are totally safe.
