Let me check. He probably forgot to pay the bill for hosting.
put the Khozmo shunt attenuator in today, pic shows the dueland copper/silver caps in the interstage. Khozmo is cleaner less haze top to bottom.
The simply changes I have made improve the Studio B's wonderful qualitys. The Khozmo was like cleaning a window, removing grit and grime. All frequencies are cleaner in there presentation, more space around intruments. each instrument is more difned on the soundstage. The bass has become more defined and quicker. Really nice
Was this DIY? What’s the value of the attenuator? I’m just asking for future reference as something to do. (Although I’d be worried about opening up the box and leaving solder all over.) Thanks!
I have a good friend who is an electrical engineer who can solder, he did all the work. The Pot is 50kohm
The EC stuff looks good, but the Moth stuff is ooooeeeee! The small details and those windows to peek in on tubes. Its like it is from a victorian age science lab.
So i wobbled for a year. Bought, loaned, and tried other revered amps such as the taboo. But was never satisfied. A week or so ago i bit the bullet and put an order in with Craig and I got the tracking today. A long cross country trip during a holiday week.
For those still on the cusp, I believe from my conversations there are 4 or less amps left.
Only regret is not knowing about mercury tubes before hand. They look sweeeeeet.
I believe it is back now.
Heck yeah @Souldriver -- getting mine (used) supposedly on Saturday, assuming FedEx does not drop the ball in some way. Three separate packages (!).
I guess I'll ask here for the heck of it: I've already PM'ed Josh to see what he was doing (he's using BAL->Cinemags->Studio B with his Gungnir MB, but used SE outs when he had LIM), so I thought I'd see how many Studio B owners are using BAL->SE 1:1 converters of some kind (DIY or Radial or otherwise) with Schiit DAC's vs. how many are running with SE outs, especially if they have LIM, since that's what I'm running.
I think the only way to tame my nervosa will be to do the only thing I can that seems sensible, which is A/B the LIM's SE outputs into Studio B and something like a Radial between its BAL outputs and Studio B's second set of inputs and see which I prefer. Could always sell the 1:1 converter. Should be easy to do, too, w/ Studio B's input toggle.
Gotta love how this hobby turns you into a nutter sometimes (okay, much of the time).
Congrats! Did you opt for 300B or 2A3? Also, does Craig offer a switch for turning on/off the tertiary feedback?
I saw a few minutes after i put my order in a few popped up used for sub $3k deals, tubes included. I assume one of those went to you?
I would of liked to save some cash and put it towards the tubes but timing, plus i do get the warranty now, though i hope to not need it.
300Bs for me. I know there was the 2A3 option, but I know more about 300Bs and i have some good used options on acmes, and emls from friends. And if the loaner goes well, i wouldnt count out the WEs especially with that warranty. I just hope i dont miss too much chime, sparkle, etc in the treble, where a 2A3 may have helped.
I grabbed the one that was being re-sold by The Music Room. Looks to be serial number 2, but they test all the equipment they re-sell along with a few other guarantees/assurances vs. buying from a rando on US Audio Mart or similar.
Not much to get jealous about with the tubes I’m getting, they’re the entry tier Shuguangs. I am grateful I have something to get by until I grab some Gold Lions or something similar, though. Will also be a good test of Marv’s assertion that Craig’s amps sound good with even middling or crap tubes.
I mean its about $700 you saved at least. I was thinking of asking craig to only build mine when it was the last one left. Last serial number has to be worth something right?
Heres a question.
Has anyone heard a solid state headphone amp that has speaker outs and has 4-10 watts speaker output that is equal to the Studio B?
I’ve actually wondered the same thing. I’d love to know if such an amp exists.
The McIntosh MHA150 is similar, though more powerful.
Yes- actually I have and enjoy $200 "1998" Shuguang 300B on my Balancing Act some of the time. A little soft and warm but sometimes that is what I want and I go back and forth between those and EML PX-4. (I have the switch on the BA.)
Later, I will definitely re-buy KR PX-4. (Anyone have some for sale?) And I want to borrow and try new WE 300B before buying. It is a surprisingly better time with more options these days as good inexpensive and expensive Chinese options exist now too. If you enjoy the Shuguang 300B, just enjoy them.
I would like to point you towards the loaner thread for them.
