USB really is shit. I was very skeptical until I heard the difference the REGEN made to my system. It's a slippery slope though. I'm consciously avoiding posts about overkill power supplies for these defuckifiers and how sq is improved yet again. I wonder if I'll ever see an affordable dac with a usb board that negates these defuckifiers.

IMO if you pony up for a Gungnir Multibit or Yggdrasil, it should come with the Wyrd or at least it should have that tech built in. I had never used a decrapifier before I bought the Gungnir Multibit. I got it in and the dac was unsuable, because the usb kept dropping or freezing the player. I had never had any trouble with usb dacs before.

Then I bought a Wyrd as a last resort and I've not had a single issue since. Although now that I've come to appreciate these devices, I wish that I had bougth a Regen instead. Anybody want to swap?

If you just need a nice balanced volume pot this will work perfectly and is nicely made.

Do you have a headphone amp with a preamp out? I have Gungnir Multibit going into a Mjolnir 2 via XLR, then preamp outs to active speakers. But if not, the passive preamp recommend by @MrTie achieves the same thing

From what I understand, Gen 3 USB in Yggdrasil is a big step up vs. Gen 2 in Bifrost and Gungnir.

thanks guys! my amb m3 needs to me modded in order to be used as a preamp... so nok for the time being.

I thought that the kind of solution proposed by @MrTie might somehow have a negative impact on the sound quality... it is so simple and cost effective that it stupidly triggers my inner skeptic. haha

eh I really doubt it will have much/any impact, it's simply a decent quality pot, I use a Schiit Sys as a switcher, as my gear is all SE and I cannot tell it from wire if fully open.

Pulled the trigger on a gumpy today, got a pretty good deal. Been looking to try something else than Sabre or PCM1704 for a while. Was also considering the Yggdrasil but it's twice the money and I was worried about synergy in my system.

From what I've read the gumpy is a little bit warmer and more forgiving than the Yggdrasil and that might not be such a bad thing since both my amp and headphones are very transparent.

Was also considering some other DACs but they were all 50-150% more than the gumpy. It's entirely possible I'm just too much of cheapskate to ever blow north of $2000 on a DAC. Maybe that's a good thing? Haha, I don't know.

Anyway - exciting stuff. Should be here in a week or so. Lots of burn in and warm-up will follow.

I guess I should learn what it's called if I'm going to own one. Haha.

Now, if you are referring to my wife "grumpy" would be completely accurate.

Hmm, Gungnir Multibit's output is too high for my setup, i barely move the preamp volume control past 7 o clock and its unbearably loud, this should fill the bill nicely. Thanks for posting this, I'll give it a shot.

Nice to see my Acer c720 Chromebook recognise the Gungnir Multibit. I farted around Youtube for a while but the beer volume was getting a bit silly so the Crown X3000 cable got pulled. Some new live CSNY took song of the night.

I agree. I just got them in and am running them through speakers (Amazon rules!). I was a little worried about impedance matching, but these sound really good, batting way way above its league, or what i would have expected. I'll let it settle in for a few days, as the speakers are burning in, Thanks again to @MrTie for posting this, I owe you at least a beer, heck a whole barrel.

I've read that people liked sound from warm running gear. This thing doesn't really seem stubborn to warm up. Any hotter would be concerning and no way I'm leaving it on 24/7 hell no. Trying the Tara labs cascade burn in and then some cd's thanks to the pre I had collecting dust.

Leaving it on is pretty much a pre-requisite to having it sound the best. Most people have found it takes >24 hours to warm up.

It's not so much as keeping it "warm" per se, it's more about stabilizing the resistor ladder network,

It needs to be kept on 24/7 to sound its best.

This is good advice for most DACs.

Any of you have problems with excessive amounts of "clicking sounds" ?
