@atomicbob Many thanks for your continued work in taking and sharing these measurements! With respect to dynamic range, the difference between the usb and spdif/toslink inputs is interesting. Looks like the numbers are actually pretty similar for Modi Multibit and Bifrost Multibit over spdif, but Bifrost Multibit is substantially better via usb.

I mean, I could maybe get having one less VAC. Understandable, can happen to anyone. But two!?

    TWO LESS GODDAMN VACs!?

For shame, @schiit. For shame... :p

@atomicbob Thank you for the detailed/awesome measurements. If I'm reading this correctly SPDIF has a lower residual noise floor on the Modi MB. It's interesting then that the USB and USB->SPDIF measure similarly with the higher noise floor. Could this indicate an issue with the input USB signal?

You can always mod the Modi to accept DC input

But... but... you're trading 2 vacs for 1000 (one thousand!) mas.

So yeah, if you do the math that's (14/16)*(1500/500) = 2.625

Numbers don't lie people. That's a 262.5% increase in performance.

Actually, you could probably just swap the troll hunting in this thread with the excellent discussion on pre- and post-ringing in the impressions thread. It's about the same number of total posts.

Thanks for your feedback, in your opinion , is having a quieter and cooler AC transformer then stock wallwart achieve in a better sound performance?

For those like to know, been using the schiit wallwart around 4 days before i replaced it.

I'm curious as well. If the high USB noice is Momby's problem, the USB->SPDIF/COAX noise result would be low. But then, the Bifrost Multibit USB noise result is low with the same input device.

Related to above: will Wyrd lower Momby USB noise? AFAIK, Wyrd improves source signal, not DACs.

If toslink doesn't transmit noise through the cable, where could this be coming from? I think @atomicbob had the usb input plugged in simultaneously which activated the usb receiver and caused this noise. No other way for noise to get in I could think of

fyi, the absolute mess at -90dbFS is normal and expected behavior. It's a multibit dac. it plays what it gets. it doesn't have enough bits to reproduce the waveform, so the output value is just wherever the waveform is at the moment it's sampled. since the waveform is changing so much, that's a whole lot of f'ing noise.

it's like if you resize a big image really small using only nearest neighbor filtering...you're gonna end up with garbage.
