Well I need more listening time to collect my thought about it, but I think (maybe) it sounds a little bit sweeter and less fatiguing.

Also my Yggdrasil was an early model with the known glitch, so I suppose that is gone with this new firmware. (not that I ever heard it.)
It sounded great before the upgrade and sounds great after the upgrade.~35$ was cheap enough to try it.

This is what Raggy's manual says:

Can I install different modules in Ragnarok 2? If you are, or know, a technician, yes. The modules just plug in. They are the same ones we sell for Lyr 3 and Jotunheim. There’s no soldering required. If you’re planning on adding modules, please note that there is only space for one “large” module—or, in other words, the Multibit DAC module, which is oriented horizontally rather than vertically, like the 4490 DAC module, Phono Module, or RCA Input Module.

Now, if you need to ask, you are probably not a technician... so maybe try finding a professional who can do this for you. I don't own a Ragnarok, but based on that paragraph alone adding a MM card seems pretty straightforward and a skilled technician can do it without prior experience with Schiit products.

These instructions were a life saver for me. Appreciate the step by step documentation. Next now is for me to source some black screws... as the SS screws are messing with me on my black Yggdrasil..

Question, does the Unison upgrade if you order to do it yourself come with a sticker for the back of the unit? Mine that I got did not come with the sticker.

Thanks for posting these instructions. They worked perfectly. It took me 40 minutes. I went slow and easy so I wouldn’t screw anything up or strip any screws. I wouldn’t have tried this without such detailed instructions.

Sorry for the necro-bump, but I self-installed the GS firmware for my A1 Yggdrasil, along with a Unison USB board. Everything was fairly easy and straightforward, but now for whatever reason the input select doesn't work and not getting any sound output. When you did the firmware chip swap, anything else besides removing the old chip, pushing the new one in? Any specific power-on sequence needed to "flash" the firmware?

EDIT: Figured it out. Schiit mailed me a Modius firmware chip instead of Yggdrasil. Labeled as MD218 instead of YD218. I assumed it was just a different label for the same Yggdrasil firmware chip, since I didn't even think the Modius had a swappable chip. Put my old firmware chip back in, and everything works fine. Trying to figure out what the heck happened with Schiit now.

For the lock nut I use a 14mm deep socket. Thanks purr1n for the guide upgrade from Gen 5 to Unison.

One more thank you for this invaluable thread, @purr1n! It has been 8.5 years, and I'm still enjoying the hell out of my A1 Yggdrasil - from the original preorder - thanks to the trusted ears at Changstar at the time! A week or so ago, the old USB board finally gave up the ghost, and I was happy to finally take the opportunity to upgrade to Unison and the new firmware ROM in the process. It was a breeze thanks to this guide, and although I'm reasonably handy with an iron, I definitely wouldn't have messed with the Yggdrasil's somewhat complex chassis without it.

In any event, she's back up and running, happily recognized by Win 11 and sounding better than ever. Sitting back now listening to Hot Milk's new album, with the volume way up, a cold Picnic Lightning (Brouwerij West), and a big smile.
