Come now, hearing the higher string harmonics is overrated.

The way I see it you´ve done that a very long time ago already and the success of this site has only fueled your ego further. But look, this is your site and you are entitled to run it however you want. I´m just a guest here. We are obviously nowhere near the same wavelength on a lot of issues. I only post these days when there is something interesting happening in the headphone world (such as HD 660 S), but otherwise I´ve been more or less done with this hobby for a long time already. I´ll take my future posts elsewhere instead as I don´t really support the vision you have for this site.

Marvey conveyed something like this: "agree to disagree and move on."

That is how this forum works. You contributed interesting impressions and people appreciated that. A small disagreement should not have to lead to "okay, f**k it I am out of here."

    Please take it easy.

He's pissed that the majority, the Klingon High Council, and the echo chamber didn't agree to change the SBAF definition of neutral to the HD800S.

For the record I´ve had my doubts about the atmosphere here for a long time already and never intended to become a regular here to begin with. My issue is more with the general tone and style certain issues are addressed here, as well as some aspects of the overall prevailing philosophy. I get that many people love it and that´s fine, but it´s not for me. No need for drama - enjoy the hobby.

You've raised some very valid points. But I think your suggestion to "listen to neutral speakers" just opens up a whole other can of worms. I've found that the degree of speaker toe-in can have a significant impact on the perceived brightness of the speakers I've listened to. Not to mention all the other variables that are a factor, many of which are not an issue with headphones!

Anyhow, I see irony in the fact that several well thought out posts have been made regarding the neutrality of one headphone vs the other, and then the suggestion here is to use "neutral speakers" to break the tie.

Allow me to e-peen later with on-axis 1m measurements and listening positioning measurements of a few speaker setups I have in the house. I have three full sized speaker setups and two desktop nearfield setups. Three of them are calibrated to B&K or like targets at the listening position.

I would ask Vorlon do to the same with his neutral speaker references. Provide photos, 1m on-axis, and in-room listening position measurements.

Let's e-peen this, at least to determine if our speaker references are at least neutral to begin with.

Well, I most certainly did not admonish you and I found your SCOTUS reference spot on. You know it when you hear it (provided that one has been in an environment where the sound of neutral is constantly reinforced by calibrated speakers, good enough speakers, or peers with trained ears, especially those involved in sound engineering - it is all to easy to acclimatize to non-neutral sound signatures. I recall giving @OJneg some crap about how he had acclimated to his modded HD800, of which he agreed.)

So yes, "you know it when you hear it", very much applies here. And even then, most people, including myself, tend to refrain from using the word neutral. I believe I used the word neutral exactly zero times in my Andromeda IEM review. Relative comparisons to other gear are a better way to go, with a statement of preference.

I just get a bit annoyed when people tell me how they've supposedly listened to neutral speakers, and that I should do the same to check my ears. It's annoying because people like this are obviously using a cheap rhetorical device to establish that they are know better what neutral sounds like, whereas I can actually objectively prove it.

For those who don't find themselves being included in the "neutral" club, remember that it's always possible to calibrate one's review like a negative picture.

EDIT : moreover, contradictory point of views are more interesting than a sea of identical views, by being thought provoking. It's all a matter of proper argumentating instead of arguing.

It's just a reference for the sake of reference. I have an modded HD800 which I use. I also have a modded HD650. If I still listened to headphones much, the mid-bassy Atticus or bassy V-shaped HP-3 would be part of my collection. My Lowther / Oris horns are sorta fucked - being extremely uneven throughout the upper mids and treble.

Reference is a necessary evil, no way around it. You said it the way I would have Marvey, the proverbial shit hits the fan when absolute (reference) is defined by relative (preference).

We need as much treble fuckery as we need bass wankery and midrange bigotery.

Crossposting led to misunderstanding here, I am talking preference, not csd.

One more thing: regardless of tonal shift, balance, or slope, one thing that is never normal are peaks or ringing. I'm not a measurement extremist; but those who have been around a while know that this usually translates into something. CSDs are an underappreciated tool - they are far superior to frequency response plots in detecting upper mid or treble fuckery.

The study of CSDs with headphones has been going on since 2011 or before on HF, and then with CS members.

As for groupthink or echo chamber, it turns out we didn't make this stuff up. We just reinvented the wheel (there are some terms that SBAF uses slightly differently from below, but it's translatable.)

SBAF was never meant to be all inclusive. The vibe and overall prevailing philosophy is intentional. I get crap from established members saying we aren't being exlusive enough, and I get crap from new members that we aren't accepting enough of new views, that I'm a egomaniac because of the popularity of the site, blah blah blah. The difference now (and this is something that took me a while to learn and do) is that I stopped caring about what people think because I cannot win. I only have this to offer: sucks to be you - mainly because it's better than sucks to be me.

The LS50 are bright in general, not because a 'flat FR' is bright (they aren't flat).

    There is truth to this.

I have a friend who has been a studio recording engineer since the 80's. When I get a chance, I talk to him about headphones and I ask him about his take on neutrality, sound signatures, opinion on headphones of one kind or another, etc. Based on this, I am slowly calibrating my own listening to learn how to hear certain things that hears easily.

I find that interacting on forums is valuable in this respect as well but its much more difficult due to the lack of actual face-to-face conversations with a reliance on text. Aside from that, the prevailing opinion on a certain topic is informative and can be used to aid in calibration of listening ability. What matters in this is who is setting the direction and how consensus is built. This is related to listening experience, etc.

I don't really know anyone here, nor do I know much about their listening experience, but certain topics seem to lead to the same shared answer from various people. This is valuable, to me at least. I can't yet say if this is an intellectual echo chamber or not, but so far it seems pretty good on this site.
