Yes, this is the pair i purchased from Tari in this thread http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/fs-donmodded-grado-hp1000.2420/

Superb sounding cans, i expected nothing less from a pair of headphone with this kind of reputation. Too bad the fit is not really comfortable with my head (alright,i always have this problems with Grado's offering).

as Tari stated in the original thread, the lettering is not in 100% and One driver was also at reverse polarity, so they simply need to have the polarity switches opposite from each other to play their normal selves.

you can take a look at the currentmost photo here

Just to give the n00bs some level of reference... I spent a late night one night a few sleeps ago blasting through my HP-2's ("binned" slightly less than HP-1 IE they are pretty much the same thing) on my old janky Melos amp and it handily destroyed what I was getting out of the Torpedo III and HD600. I wish I had the HD800 to further drive the point home but these old Grados are easily end game, totl, gutb or whatever.

Amp choice is also very critical, the Melos actually sounds better with the Grados than with the T3. Don't get me wrong though, I am all about the T3 and the Melos is definitely janky. Back when I had it/was a teenager the EC Balancing Act was the all the shiznits.

Can't bring myself to do it! Even when he was still around, (RIP) if Joe Grado were to be commissioned for driver repair/replace it would have been a huge risk to send it his way in terms of money and time (lot of horror stories TBH). I do admit it's pretty tough to kill a driver and imo especially grado headphones are pretty simple overall though.

Speaking of which, I would think the polarity switch should be easy to fix; just reverse the wiring either at the switch or at the driver??

Just like to add to how awesome these headphones are!
After going through many headphones, the HD800s and HP1s are left.
HP1s bring you closer to the music than the HD800s but still provides a rich, balanced sound without sacrificing details - especially the vocals.
I think it's very much a reference headphone.
I would caution about doing the mod...I tried it myself but as others have mentioned, these wire connections are most likely very worn and may break.
I suck at soldering so I sent it to someone to restore the connections and everything sounds great though I can't say how much of a difference the mod is making.
I don't think there's much danger in damaging the drivers but just be prepared for the headphone cable wires to potenitally break.

dBel84/Don's mods are better than the mods Marv posted. In fact, they're better than the mods Joe Grado was doing before he passed. I love my pair (the only other pair around).

I used to have the "JG-ultimate" version, then after speaking to another former owner of the DB version, I modded it to the DB version. There goes JG's grease. LOL.

So I guess there are three out there now.. I'm using it with the TTVJ Deluxe Flats as well!

not sure if I ever documented it anywhere , I know I should have taken pictures of the process but I was just messing with Tari's pair to try and optimize them. I could probably recall what I did and seem to think I typed it out for someone who was interested some time ago.

let me know if you want the details and I can put it together.

    ..dB

as an aside, these Grado's are one of the few headphones that belong in the "truly great" category.

I think my pair (the other one Tzvi mentioned) will be up for sale soon, too. I actually can't afford to keep so many headphones and so much gear and I'll have to sell. The Andromedas get 90+% of my listening time so I think I might have to start selling most of my full sized cans.
